Sittin’ on Top of the World
Ukulele Arrangement -- Fingerpicking Accompaniment -- Key of G
(Complete lyrics at the bottom of this page)

This is a classic folksong that makes a great introduction to fingerpicking on the uke. All of the chords are easy so you can concentrate more on what your right hand is doing without having to worry too much about the left hand (assuming you can already play these chords). It’s just pattern picking accompaniment, Travis picking style. Basically the same pattern is played throughout the song and I’ve included the fingering on the first line (T=Thumb, I=Index, M=Middle). Most importantly, be sure that your thumb alternates between the 4th and 3rd strings on each beat.

The melody is written on the line below the uke tablature. It’s not really meant to be played but is written out so you’ll know where you are in the song as well as helping you learn the melody of the song. It’s fine to play it though if you want to, and it might actually help you to learn to pick out your own melodies.

'Twas in the spring, one sunny day,
My sweetheart left me, she went away,
Now she's gone, but I don't worry,
'Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world.

She called me up, from down in El Paso,
She said "Come back daddy, oh I need you so."
Now she's gone, but I don't worry,
'Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world.

You don't like my peaches, don't shake my tree,
Get out of my orchard, let my peaches be.
Now she's gone, but I don't worry,
'Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world.

And don't you come here runnin',
Holdin' out your hand,
I'm gonna get me a woman,
Like you got your man.
Now she's gone, but I don't worry,
'Cause I'm sittin', on top of the world.
