Bluegrass Banjo -- Level 2
by Richard Hefner

The Level 2 arrangements will build upon the techniques you learned in Level 1. We will add two additional commonly used bluegrass rolls at this level: the forward roll and the forward-reverse roll.

It is very important that you learn to play each of the rolls that you have learned so far as smoothly as possible, using the correct right hand fingers and making sure that your timing is correct. Mostly all of the notes that are played in bluegrass banjo are either eighth notes or quarter notes, with the great majority being eighth notes. Since the quarter notes are not used as much and their time value is twice as long as the eighth notes, it may help if you think of the quarter notes as long notes.
