Five Ricercars
Arranged and Recorded by John Sheehan
From the CD, “Notes from Suburbia”

Lute Tuning low to high: E-A-D-F#-B-E
Capo 3rd fret
James Goodall Concert Jumbo

TIPS:

  • Sustain notes over each other for best contrapuntal effect.
  • Don't lift fretting fingers until it's absolutely necessary for your ability.
  • Alternate Thumb and Index on 16th note passages.

Anonymous 16th century Ricercars (RIKER-CARS) Originally written for six course lute.

Ricercars are Fantasia and Prelude like pieces that use a variety of contrapuntal techniques. A predecessor form to the fugue.

These are the first five selections from a book of French tab (letters indicating frets instead of numbers) arrangements of what were originally Italian tab (upside down number tab) pieces from the Sienna lute manuscript. On the CD I performed the pieces in this order: 1,2,3,5,4.

....NOTES FROM SUBURBIA (2003)
A collection of thirteen fingerstyle songs and instrumentals: Six original songs, five original solo guitar compositions and two public domain works. Styles range from folk rock, jazz, Renaissance lute pieces, Irish baroque, blues, and open tuning folk. Contains the song, “Self made Man,” the antithesis to Modern Man.
