Guatemalass,

You say that the intonation is horrendous on the Griz.  That must mean you followed the directions with the kit for locating the bridge.  It is not correct.  It is up to the person building the kit to do the calculations to get the saddle positioned in the right spot.  I have put together two of these kits and the second one intonated very nicely.  The sound is quiet due to the plywood but didn't sound that bad.  For the price it was definately worth it.

It depends on what someone wants out of the kit.  If you want to get your feet wet with putting an instrument together and not worry about ruining a more expensive kit then it is a good way to go.  And I would recommend making another fretboard which would give the builder experience in that area.

If someone has some woodworking experience under their belt then stepping up to the woodcraft or Uk Uke kits may be the way to go from the start.  Most definately either of those kits would produce a very nice ukulele and with the UK kit you will be able to get some really nice wood as well.

A while back I thought about doing what Mark did and rout off the top of one of the Griz kits but at this point I'm gearing up in the shop to be able to build a soprano from scratch.  I have a couple more tenors to get going on first.

Yep Dom,
I was an idiot and took them at their word.  I didn't have any problems with a cigar box uke I made (thank you online fret calculator) before putting the kit together, but being the dummy I was, I assumed that they had done their calculations correctly (you know what they say about ASSuming).
Since then, I made a reso-uke, and the online fret-calculator did the trick.  I only wish I wouldn't have been so trusting.  I've learned my lesson, and value the experience of screwing up...so I won't do it next time.
Thanks for giving good advice to those who haven't already messed up.

Cuke, once you have the FB glued onto the neck and the neck glued/attached to the body then measure from the nut to the center of the 12th fret.  Then meaure from the center of the 12th fret the same distance to the front edge of the saddle plus approx 1/16" to allow for compensation when pressing down the strings.

Good luck.

Isee where Stewmac has the solid mahogany kits again and look good, I have built a mandolin kit I bought from them and it is a great player.

http://www.stewmac.com   And in the search box, type in ukulele kit and it will take you there and go to instruction and you can print out the complete manuel and how to build it.

It is $ 99.00 plus shipping

Charlie

I just finished my Grizzly Uke kit. Im fairly happy with it.

I had a few minor problems with it, but it wasnt too difficult. I think if I made a second one, it would turn out a lot better. I wonder where my wife hid my credit card ...

Its not a fantastic instrument, but its serviceable and easy enough to build that you can do it without any real wood working skills. Over all not a bad experiance.

If anyone decides to build one, the following sites were very useful -

http://www.finkbuilt.com/blog/category/ukulele/

Now I gotta go learn to play the darn thing.
