Does anyone have experience with this mandolin or think it's a good deal for one to start with? It's going for $150 on zzounds and includes picks, gig bag, strap, lesson book, and pitch pipe.

Or should I go with a ~$280 Kentucky model, even though I'm not going to do bluegrass?

I also want to try mandocello or mandola, since I play cello, but they're so frickin' rare. The only place I can find one is ebay. Anyone in Maryland who knows where I could get one? There's a mandola going on ebay right now for $100, but I doubt if it would be worth it. I guess it's just a ukulele with eight strings tuned like a mandola? Doesn't seem to be rare, considering how many are on ebay right now.

hey there is a site called elderly.com that has celtic style mandolas and mandocellos for around $500 bucks maybe you could try one of these. oh yeah and rougue makes very good mandolins for the money. I Play my sponsers mandolin on stage but i really enjoy playing the cheap mandolin, just in case.. you never know when something will happen to your mandolin lol.

I buy from Musican's Friend since I've got a Plat.Card thru them. They've got about the same deals as ZZ. I looked at the Washburn package for $150 but ended up going with the Epi MM-30 for the same price. Of course I had to get a tuner, books, hard case, ect. but the Epi is a nice mando for the money and since Gibson looks over the quality control what more can I say about it. I plan on getting an MM-50 at a later date since I like to stay brand loyal when I can. Anyway, I know that's not much help but just thought I might point ya' toward the Epi MM-30 so you could think about it as well.
