I think I've fallen in love with the Eastman MD614.

BG mandolins seem to usually be f-hole instruments. And that's cool, but I've always felt that the round-hole mandolins have a richer, more complete sound. At least to my ear. This one has not only a round hole, but a big one so I suspect it can produce enough volume to hold it's own with any un-amped instrument.
Factor in the beauty of the design and my wish list is now a bit longer. (I hope the tuning board isn't a plain rectangle.)

A smigde later:
I downlaoded the Eastman catalog. Impressive. But the EM614 was not in it. Or I missed it.

There is no picture of a 614 in the Eastman catalog, it's considered just a different style type in the 600 series in line with the 615.  Eastman chose to show only one picture in each series when there are four different styles for each series considering the finish and the holes.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by the tuning board being a plain rectangle. If you were referring to the fingerboard, it is radiused not flat.

I agree that the oval hole lends to a fuller sound. These mandos sound great!

Later tonight I hope to post some photos from the Eastman booth today. They had a mandocello that was awsome. Also a mandola. I'll post again when the new photos are on the site. It may be late however because I am going to an Eastman party tonight to hear John Pisanos play one of the Eastman jazz guitars. And I get to meet Eastman's founder. How cool!

Kyle

New Eastman mando photos have been added to the NAMM photos link at http://www.themandoshop.com. Also I couldn't resist playing the $100,000.00 Martin so I asked someone to take a picture as proof.

"I'm not quite sure what you meant by the tuning board being a plain rectangle."
--I meant the part of the neck where the tuning machines are attached. I've seen really trational banjos with out-of-place tuning boards. Not knowing what this one was like, I was voicing a wish that it continued it's good looks. That's all.

The final pictures I took at the show are posted on http://www.themandoshop.com including Brad Hill's green mando. Nice mando Brad! For me it's back to Florida to wait for all the new mandos I bought to arrive. What a great time!
