seaandbells-

Welcome to ezFolk! You'll find lots of good advise and music here. Nice to find a mandolin player, too, we can use a few!

I don't play mandolin (it's on my list), but I don't think you will find many tunes that use alternate tunings on mando. Most Mando players learn to play in different keys out of the standard Mando tuning (GDAE), and I haven't heard of any that even use a capo.

Don't know if this is what you wanted to hear, but it is my entire store of knowledge on the instrument.

Brad

Hi Seaandbells

I've been learning the mandolin for nearly 20 years. Never came across anybody who tuned it other than EADG. Asked my brother Barry who used to make them. He reckons you could tune it like a mandola EADC, but you'ld need to change strings for that. He also reckoned DEAD would give you open D, but I'm uncertain if your present strings would stand for that either. Looking forward to hearing it.

Ah, Gerry - do we agree to disagree?

I notice that you give the tuning for the Mandolin backwards from what I gave it (fiddle tuning).
Do you name from high to low? I've always thought of strings from the one nearest me to the one furthest away. Thus, is my GDAE the same tuning as your EADG? Is this something that the far-side-o-the-pond normally do? :fence1::huh:

(We haven't had a decent arguement here in awhile :2smiledevil:

Hey Gerry, I notice the same as Brad did,   I always refer to mandolin tuning as GDae, but I almost knew what you were meaning.

Seaandbells, You will not have much luck tring to tune different on the mandolin, I have been learning for about 10 years on the mandolin and have tried all kind of things and it don't work, I even tried nylon strings one time and that was a no no.

I have used a capo a few times maybe for Ab or Bb, but have just tried learning with out one, but my old fingers have wore out for the mandolin now.

I love the mandolin and the sound of it and wish you all the luck with it and will look for some good music from you.

Charlie

Alas, no arguement this time Brad; same tuning, looked at upside down. This is the W/E hemispheric equivalent of the phenomenon whereby water spirals down a plughole clockwise in the North and widdershins South of the equator.
