The great guitar hero of my youth (as also Jansch, Renbourn and Martyn - above).

Very sad. The end of an era.

I wonder how much impact he had on "Our American Cousins".

John

Hi John,
It seems amazing that he remained relatively unknown despite his brilliant talent, but from what I've read he was more interested in music than fame and fortune, I'm sure the influence he's had on more prominent figures has filtered through to people who've never heard of him though...

It would be interesting to know if, as you say, many of "Our American Cousins" are aware of him...

Steve.

Having been insulated from the world by an ice storm and four days without power, I only just today heard about this on our local folk music station.

I came on this board to announce this, and see that you already have, Steve, and in master fashion.  The tribute is very moving.

I was prepared to supply links, myself, and still have one with a nice article and video compilation to add:

John, I can't speak for all your "American Cousins", but I, myself, being a fan of Pentangle, Fairport Convention, and Simon and Garfunkel, am well aware of Davy Graham's contributions to contemporary music, folk and otherwise, and I hope that any among us who employ DADGAD tuning have informed ourseves of it's origin.  I suspect that many of us know and appreciate the contributions of this "traveler" and innovator.

I don't think the Davy Graham era will ever end!

Peace,

It's hard not to go through a few bars of Anji every time I practice, or in the middle of a set when I can't decide what to play next. I, like I am sure, so many others, am deeply indebited to Davy. If only for that one gem. But for so much else. Not least his example of what one man and his guitar can stand for in a sea of impotent noise.

Thanks again Davy and my heart felt condolences to his friends and family. To grieve as you must, would have been to be fortunate know and be close to him.

I was very saddened when I heard Davey Graham had passed away. Not just because the guy was a genius, but because I am seriously running out of living heroes! Hohum - at least Bob and Loudon seem healthy....

Seriously though, the guy was probably the best guitar player ever, regardless of genre.

And apparently had a sense of humour...

Dan :)

This is a link to a BBC Radio 2 Documentary from 2005, titled

"Whatever Happened to Davy Graham?", at Les Cousins Music.
