I'm sure its not a huge surprise that Merlefest is coming up this weekend down in NC, but I wanted to let any XM Satellite Radio listeners know that they are broadcasting the entire festival on their "Bluegrass Junction" station-----Starting Thursday and playing through Sunday.  I'm not going to be able to attend this year, but at least I'll be able to hear everything thats going on!  (I am in no way affiliated with XM, but I am a huge fan!)

I wish i were able to go.  But, if i was going on Saturday, I'd be certain to check out the Kruger Brothers!  They are the pride of Wilkesboro/Switzerland, incredible band.  Jens can really pick that banjo!  Have a good time Richard.

I haven't seen the Kruger Brothers but I've heard a lot about them. They're performing Saturday afternoon so I'll try to catch them. There are so many things going on at the same time it makes me a little loopy.

Earl Scruggs will be on the main stage at 7:15 and I'd really like to catch that. With my general admission seating I'll probably have to use my imagination a lot, but I've got a good zoom lens so maybe I'll be able to get some pics.

Just a little Merlefest update-----I listened to the coverage on XM on Thursday and it was outstanding.  I'd have to say that the standout musicians were:

1)  The Kruger Brothers----they played a short, but incredible set.  If no one has heard these guys before, you're in for a treat.  Jens Kruger is a jaw dropping banjo picker

2)  Jerry Douglass----It goes without saying why this guy is great

3)  Bela Fleck----his proficiency and knowledge of the fingerboard and timing is unreal

There were several other bands along the way, with the night closing with the Indigo Girls-----I'm not a big fan of theirs, so I went to bed!

Have a great time out there everyone!:laugh11:

I saw Earl with his sons back in the 70's in a small club in Toronto. It was an amazing show. I sat in the front row. He seem's to be able to play effortlessly. The man is a genius.

And now at 80 years old he's still really good. And Doc's older than that. I just hope I'm able to go to the bathroom by myself at that age.

I've seen Doc a couple of times up here in Southern Ontario. I remember him here with Merle in the 70's at one of the big festivals. There was always a lot of people who were more interested in the party than the music and he was very impatient with them, asking them to pay attention. For me, Doc was the guy who brought the guitar to the forefront. Previous to Doc, the other two guys I liked were Carter Stanley and of course Clarence White. I always wanted to meet Doc, but never got the opportunity. It was tragic what happened to Merle, another amazing and creative picker.

Just for the record, I got rained out. It's been raining most of the day so I opted to stay where it's nice and dry and within my budget... home.

Well... there's always next year.

Richard!!??...You must be joking. I do more than just stand in the rain to hear some of those guys play. That's too bad, what about tomorrow? Is the show going to go on? I guess the whole east coast of N.A. is raining today. It's pretty miserable up hear in Ont. too.

The weather's supposed to be even worse tomorrow, but of course today's the big day. I'm sure they'll do fine without me up there. I'm old and crotchety and my wife is even older and crotchetier than I am so our days of sloshing through the slop to see anybody play ended a while back.

My son and his girlfriend had 3-day tickets and are up there right now. I called him a little earlier and he said they were okay because they're wearing ponchos. But me, I'm just not a poncho kind of guy.

XM is fantastic....

I listened to much of the MerleFest at work and really enjoyed it. The fun part for me was hearing a band called Pine Mountain Railroad (I think that was the name) play a version of a Journey song.

They were great ...

Now I just have to add that song to my playlist.

You're right-----XM's coverage was terrific.  I had heard of Pine Mtn. Railroad before, but didn't know much about them.  They did put on a heck of a show.  There were so many great performances that it's tough to choose who I liked best!  It kinda stinks that they got all that rain.
