Hi, Folks,

A couple of months ago I returned from France with a small inheritance.  I used most of it to lighten my debt load, and squandered the rest on musical instruments and such.  I bought a Roland MP 60 piano, an Edirol UA 4-FX Recording interface, (which I still can’t get to work with my computer,) and these two folk instruments:  an Ome Juniper openback banjo, and a Walnut Creek mountain dulcimer:

I took a little ride to Bar Harbor, Maine, to try out the Walnut Creek dulcimers at:

The folks there are very nice, and have a great array of folk instruments at reasonable prices.

I bought my Ome banjo online at:

John there is also very nice.  Anybody who sells banjos and unicycles can’t be all bad.

Here are a couple of tunes I laid down quickly to give everyone a chance to hear these wonderful instruments, (albeit clumsily played):

The Cruel War / How Can I Keep from Singing
Dulcimer
play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate

Shady Grove / Pretty Polly
Banjo
play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate

Hey Tony,

Way to squander the inheritance! They're both really nice but being a banjo guy I especially like that Ome banjo. Now I'm sittin' here with banjo envy and no old, rich relatives.

Tony -

Any money invested in acoustic instruments isn't "squandered!"

Love the sound of the dulcimer, and really like the soundhole work!

That Ome has a great sound, too! Fiberskin head? Looks like a 12" pot, too.

Richard - I don't even have any young rich relatives I could knock off for the inheritance!

So, noooooo, not jealous one iota. Nope, not me. :2cry::laugh10:

Tony, they really are beautiful instruments. And I enjoyed the songs you put up. I'm sure you knew that "How Can I Keep From Singing" is one of my all time favorite songs, so that's why you chose that one, right?? :)

Congratulations on your good fortune and I know you'll use them to their greatest advantage.

Cheers -
Amy

Yeah, that soundhole work, (and the scrolled peghead,) are what first drew me to the Walnut Creek dulcimer, but the sound, intonation, and playability are what sold me.

The Ome has a great sound, playability, intonation, and great expressiveness, (something I'm not proficient enough, yet, to showcase.)  Yes, it has a Remo Fiberskyn head, and a 12' pot.  I thought I would prefer an 11' pot, but the 12' was available.  In the end, though, I think I'm glad I got the 12', because of the nice mellow 'plunky' sound it can yield.

Thanks, Charlie, I'm really excited, and I expect I'll get enjoyment well beyond the monetary value of the instruments.

That banjo is indeed a work of art.  The pictures hardly do it justice, and it plays even nicer than it looks.  Now I need to bring my playing up to the level of the instrument.

Thanks, Amy. It's funny - I don't remember your mentioning 'How Can I Keep from Singing', but I was certainly thinking of you when I decided to use that song.

Tony,

congrats on your purchases!  What a fine pair of instruments!:)  I have no PC sound at work, and other commitments have kept me offline at home - I'll have a listen to the tracks over the weekend.

EDIT: Both sounding good tony - love the sound of that Dulcimer !

Thanks, Carl.

I'm not very happy with my playing on the dulcimer demo.  Currently practising, and will record it over when I've got it down.

The instrument has a much sweeter and more evocative sound than I brought out here.  It deserves better.

Well, I have practised, and rerecorded my dulcimer demo.  I'm much happier with it this time:

The Cruel War / How Can I Keep from Singing
play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate
