Greetings all, Last evening I had the great privilege of performing a set with my dear friend Margie of the brilliant band Sonas at the Clinton New Jersey Elks Holiday Toy Drive. The evening included performances from area musicians and bands. What impressed me the most was the amount of toys collected to go out to area families greatly struggling in these times. My admiration was greatly amplified by the fact that many of us here in New Jersey, as I'm sure many reading this can identify with, find ourselves in times of financial difficulty although thankfully not the dire circumstances faced by a good number of folks. When we finished our last song and I thanked everyone for their generosity, especially knowing that for some that twenty dollar toy they brought with them may represent the difference between getting another tank of petrol for the car or not next week, it occurred to me that the American Spirit was still alive, the spirit that moves us to do with even less so that our neighbor may have just a little. This was a very strong part of the very modest community I grew up in here in Central New Jersey. If there was a neighbor that lost his job or was hurt and out of work we did with a little less on the dinner plate so that our neighbors would not go to bed hungry. I saw that same spirit last night when I saw what amounted to a massive pile of toys and heard massive applause when someone new walked in and added yet another to the heap. This to me is the great American Spirit, a spirit that transcends ethnicity, faith, and any other self impossed boundaries between ourselves. A spirit that even the most troubled times cannot suppress. As we debate each other as to the future direction of our great country let's not forget the very aspect that makes it so grand; a compassion for each other that runs so deep that it evokes the sacrifices I witnessed last evening. God bless all! Peace, Ed

Very well said, Ed. I would say that this goes beyond the American spirit to the human spirit. While we can find examples of bad behavior anywhere there are many examples daily of people putting aside differences to help others. Sadly, these events are ignored while we get bombarded with the negative. Thank you for your effort and for sharing this with us.

Thanks Tony! Aye Gary, it indeed is the human spirit as I'm sure this behavior is not limited to our country. I agree that we seem to talk about the bad stuff way more then the good stuff. All the best! Peace, Ed
