Recently word of his serious condition circulated. With utmost respect I am saddened to report that he has passed on. My he liven up the heavenly band.

I have an instructional DVD of Mike Seeger demonstrating the Guitar Styles of the Carter Family.  Rest in peace, Mr. Seeger.

I was there. The photo I believe was taken at one of the workshops. I never knew him, but I had a passing acquaintance with John Cohen.

Very sad...

When I was attending Merrimack College I attended an instructional/informational concert given by Mike Seeger.

He was my inspiration to learn to Travis-pick the guitar, and to play the banjo.

Rest in Peace, Mike

I read the obit Will posted. Accurate but, to me, sadly incomplete. Mike never had (nor sought) the fame his half-brother was burdened with. But as we know, Mike (and for a large part, Penny's) importance in the revival and sustenance of American folk music traditions cannot be waved off as almost a footnote.
Mike Seeger introduced many of us to the purity and beauty of our own music; and through the people he touched, others are brought into the music for hopefully countless generations.
Yes, Pete did this too and taking nothing away from his great accomplishments and my deep admiration (Pete is one of my heroes), I believe Mike deserved an obit written by someone who understood the depth of his contribution.

Later edit: Over on Facebook the train of comments about Mr Seeger is providing the emotive words that needed to be said, at least for me.

There was a warmth in the man and a joy that came through the music. The obits are accurate. But all they speak about are accomplishments. Well, for those who care, well, they already know about him.

This was passed along by the Mike Seeger group on Facebook. It is the NY TImes obit. And has the feel of someone with an an ear for the man's life and music.

I guess it took a while for this to happen. A tribute concert is taking place this weekend in Ct. It's a little far for me to attend. People in the traditional music world are expressing themselves now. I will miss his music. But thanks to him and good part, the music will live on.

Sugar in the Gourd ( http://www.sugarinthegourd.com ) has been streaming his recordings for the last few days. Of course, every time I try to access it, it's swamped and I can't get on.

In a way, that may be a good thing - I know his music and maybe there are some listeners hearing him for the first time.

Pity that he will get the attention now. But then again, some of the New Lost City Ramblers work will be aired again. Tom Cat Blues, Dallas Rag....
