Anyone out there know of groups or people who get together or want to. Most times I've heard of such out here, they're into performing. I just want to jam.

What has led me to boards like this one is that I can't find anyone within a hundred miles of me that is interested in playing anything but country glitz or heavy metal. I'm mainly into blues and may well be the only blues fan in my end of Kentucky. I'd be open to folk, or about anything else, if I had the chance to play. Funny how there can be so many guitar players, and none any where near each other. I sometimes wonder if the number of people who actually bother to play music anymore is on the decline.

Maybe, if given the right atmosphere, you could make it happen? I'm just floored at what has happened for myself and my coworkers. A year and a half ago one guy brought a guitar to work to see if anyone knew how to tune it. It was the spark. It was rather awkward at first, a couple of us got interested and bought guitars, and took them to work. We decided to learn to play over our lunch breaks. It was intimidating trying to learn, with the ever present non playing co-workers listening in (and never a lack of comments). But we kept at, it and slowly, more interest developed, some more guys got guitars, and we even started having get togethers on weekends. A year and a half later, and our learning sessions have become out and out jam sessions! Whats even more interesting is the directions we are taking. Personally, I've taken up ukulele, and gotten into resonator guitars and slide. My buddy Cmac recently added banjo to the mix. Our buddy Tim3finger just got a bass and is kicking butt on that. If the first guy wouldn't have brought that first guitar to work...I sometimes wonder what would have happened, or in other words, never would have happened.

That's a great story. I will definitely start looking around for opportunities. I get to feeling like I really need input from someone else, just to keep things fresh. I find that I get bored with my own playing because it starts sounding the same. New ideas, that's the ticket!

It's Summertime- 1) pack a picnic lunch. 2) cool a six-pack of your favorite (non-alcoholic) beverage. 3) put your axe into its case or gigbag. 4) make sure you have extree strings, picks, etc. 5) if you have a portable recorder, pack it. 6) throw all this stuff into (or onto) your current mode of transport. 7) don't forget some pencil and paper. 8) head for the local park. 9) find a nice shady tree 10) start pickin' RESULT: lots of interested folks comin' by. probably some even play music, themselves. make new friends. find some folk to jam with. Good luck, and keep us informed! Brad

Philj- The pencil and paper is to get names and numbers - hopefully you'll find the folks you're lookin' for. And the specification for non-alcoholic beverages has to do with the cops haulin' you away to the tank! Just think of all the bad things that could happen to you axe while you were there! (Disclaimer: I have nothing against moderate alcohol intake - I have been known to partake early (and often), myself!) Brad, The pencil and paper is to get names and numbers - hopefully you'll find the folks you're lookin' for. --I figured out possibly uses for writing impliments. At first I thought of breaking the pencil in half, rubing it together and using the paper at tinder to cook lunch. But that was too much like work. And the specification for non-alcoholic beverages has to do with the cops haulin' you away to the tank! --Drinking in a public place is courting am unpleasant afternoon. This is the problem as I see it. I'm in my 60's. The free and open Washington Square atmosphere of my youth is long gone. That cauldron of creativity was a wonderful time and place. And everyone has moved on. But that was something to wish to revisit. When I meet people who play (or still play) the good one want to perform, the poor ones want to kum-ba-ya. I have no stage ambitions (even though I work as an accompaniest from time to time). Just sitting in with other competant players and working out some good music is all I'd like to do. And it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Philj- I'm 62 myself, and I know what you're saying. I still the park idea works, if you are willing to put up with some of each of the types you mentioned. Sometime the right mix will come along. If it wasn't so consistenly in the 100+ range, I would be following my own advice. The pencil also makes a handy substitute capo, as long as you kept the rubberband that held your straw to the thermos Brad

"The pencil also makes a handy substitute capo, as long as you kept the rubberband that held your straw to the thermos" --I am beginning to count of you for hard-core practical advice. In about 30 hours, (Saturday at 6:00 PM), I will be accompaning a wonderful singer/songwriter for an hour "concert." It is really a dress rehearsal us for an appearance at Music in the Meadow, a benefit festival in Chester, Vermont next month. (July 9) We'll be doing about a dozen or so mostly original compositions. Since he sings, he picks the key. So I played in B-flat more in the last few months with him, than I've ever played in my life. I will be sure to bring several extra rubberbands onstage. Which reminds me to change the strings on my amazing Martin DMX (or is is DXM?). Just farming through my old posts and found this thread. Which still annoys me. So I'll ask again... Are there any old time and or bluegrass musicians in Nassau County, New York except me? And if there are, let's jam.
