In 1966, inspired by the music of Donovan, I got my first guitar. In searching for folk-style music to play, I bought an album by Pete Seeger; the Concert at Carnagie Hall. That one album (this was before CD's were even imagined) changed my life. Reading a biography of Gandhi at age 10 already had a major impact; Pete's music spurred me on. Shortly after getting that record I went to the bargain basement at Montgomery Wards and bought a bakelite, open-backed banjo. No one in my area played the banjo, so I taught myself. (My recordings will reveal that I was not the best teacher, but I am what I am.)

In the 1980's I was helping out at the Bread and Roses Coffeehouse in Baltimore; Pete Seeger came to town to do a benefit concert. The concert was thrilling. Better yet, I got to spend time with Pete after the concert over coffee. I had never before met one of my inspirations and I was not disappointed. Pete was soft-spoken, thoughtful, and intelligent.

A couple of years later, I attended a gathering of socially-active musicicans and songwriters in NYC. The weekend ended with an open mike. As I stood on the stage, I saw Pete Seeger in the audience singing along to my song. (That song, The Peace Song, is in my music files here.) It was such a thrill and such a reversal of roles.

While many disagree with some of Pete's views, he has done a lot of good. His work with the Clearwater is something that I think everyone can appreciate. I personally appreciate that Pete has always followed his conscience no matter how it might affect his career. I know from experience that that is not an easy thing to do.

I'd like to take this time to thank Pete Seeger for the role he has played in my life and in the life of many others, and to wish him a happy 90th birthday with many more to come. The past 90 years were well spent, and I am sure the coming ones will be as well.

Great story Gary, what a thrill that must have been to have one of your musical heroes in the audience singing along to one of your own songs. That is truly awesome. Happy Birthday Mr. Seeger.

It did indeed feel good; that was probably the highlight of 40 years of musical performance. :D

I'm working on reviewing Gary's tribute to Pete CD, "To Everything There is a Season," and will say here and now that it is worth much more than the paltry amount he is charging on his GBandF site!
