Hi I am starting this thread for people to share if they are so inclined their wisdom on how to best record the flute. I am having a lot of problems recording the flute. I have purchased a condenser mike and it picks up a lot of interference from the power supply to my bedroom. I have come up with a few ideas to cope with this wich I can share if requested. At the moment I am interested with any information you may have to share. One thing I can quickly share regards the Alto flute. You would think a bigger pipe would require more breath, but this is not true form me. I get a louder purer tone with less breath, it seems to be a much more resonant instrument than the concert flute.

Hi nigels, The noise sounds like a big problem - what kind of gear do you use and how'd you fix it?

Hi JRC I have a Bheringer B2 condenser mike, I was picking up a lot of noise that was like electrical interference from the power supply. Things improved when I brought a Bheringer preamp whch has phantom power. I run this of a 12 volt battery with an inverter and the interference was much reduced but not eliminated. I recently purchased a Bherringer noise gate(MDX1600) this helped but it did not work like a traditinoal gate. Things also improved when I upgraded my DAW too a 32 bit processor. One challenge is recording the high register notes which tend to distort if the system is set to pick up the low register notes. The dynamics range for the flute is huge . Thanks for taking an interest Cheers Nigel

I'd try moving the mic around when you record. Eventually you'll find a sweet spot. I use a Rode NT1A condenser and a Shure SM87 and have no problems clipping the mic. Maybe the unit you're recording on is the problem?

I don't play flute, but I wonder if a mic spec'd for harmonica might not help with the higher registers. Just a thought.

I've been recording trad irish sessions in pubs, barns kitchens, street corners and the American Embassy in London ( I prefer kitchens, incidental noise tends to be people cooking rather than people talking bollux; gimme the percussive effect of frying bacon to in depth discussions of nonsense any day) for a few years now. My mic of choice is the now discontinued Crown/ Tandy PZM mic. It looks like a black beer mat, musicians don't get freaked because they don't think they are being recorded(I do tell them, they just don't believe it's a microphone) and the sound you get is as near what you hear while at the session as makes no difference to my (admittedly) ancient ears. You can pick them up on ebay for $60- 150 dollars. For recording living music they are the dogs bollux. And yes, I am interested in your findings about recording. Please share.
