Sorry, folks.  I'm new here and have no idea where to post this!

I recently acquired a Baritone Uke.  The geared tuners are extremely

loose.  I called the company and they told me to tighten the screws.  I did, but they were still loose.  Any suggestions or should I start a nice campfire?

Hi Harry,

Maybe you need a new set of tuners. If you don't know anything about it take it to a local music store and let them have a look at it. You might be able to use some individual guitar tuners on there or maybe some friction banjo tuners.

It's no problem that you posted here, but you can find our baritone uke forum here...

Good luck with the uke!

Stewart-McDonald sells sets of very affordable Grover open-geared tuning machines which might be good replacements on your baritone, between about $11 (chrome finish) to $16 (gold finish) for the set of 4.  They are easy to install.

The shaft on these tuners looks a bit short for a baritone uke, so I would recommend calling them to see if they're a suitable size for a baritone.

Another source that I've ordered from is Musicity - they sell a set of longer shaft Ping machine tuners for $20 a set.  I've ordered several sets of these, and I've successfully installed one set on a baritone.

Just an off-the-cuff thought — you said loose. Do  you mean they won't hold tune, or that they seem to be loose in the holes?

If the latter, you might try tightening the retainers on top of the peghead.

Also, if you have new strings, they will take a bit of time to finish stretching.

They are loose in the holes, Brad.  I really can't even get it in tune!

Thanks for the advice, all!

If they're loose in the holes, they may be replacements and the wrong size. I'd have a luthier check it out.

Was the uke used when you got it? That would make me suspect maybe the wrong size tuners were put in on a change-out.
