This weeks video showcase features Clarence Kelly and a song he wrote called " No Coal in Harlan"

The video and song are here:

Clarence is an incredible songwriter and performer and this song is a real treat.

Now that's called singin' and playin' with FEELING!

It's especially nice since it's a song he wrote! :)

You'll have to come out with a "Prospecting with the folks at ezFolk" CD (or DVD) Tinpan! ;)

Hi Richard,

I'm working on getting Clarence signed up to ezfolk I think it would be to everyone's benefit

Yeah, Tor Clarence is quite an artist. He doesn't classify himself as a singer or song writer.  Being very into the historical aspects of gold mining in Virginia I have a pretty good idea of what happened to those old miners, they would get busted up and broken down working in the mines, they were paid in mining script and that was only good at the company store. So they worked untill they couldn't anymore and were sent packing down the road homeless and penniless. The coal miners had an additional probelm in that they had to deal with coal dust, which killed thousands of them and their family members with black lung disease. Mining has a rich and colorful history, some of it very good..some of it was very bad.

Even though Clarence doesn't call himself a singer or songwriter I have come up with a name for him, I call him a painter. You don't need any pictures to see the story he is painting.

I've ordered his new CD and I can't wait to hear the rest of his music. That's just one song, although, I can't imagine topping that one.

You know Tor, I see the same things when I listen to your songs. Same goes for Richard, Verne, Brad and a bunch of people I haven't contacted yet. The folks on ez folk are some of the best kept secrets. Hopefully that will change for the folks that want change.

Prospecting DVD, funny you should mention that. I have been approached by 2 different media companies that want exclusive rights to my videos. I turned them down for a couple reasons.

One is for what I want to do, money messes everything up. My purpose in making these is to provide a free educational and entertaining platform for people to learn how to prospect, ie, what does panning look like, dredging etc. , but i also want to document what is going on in today's world. When people look back at us from 50 years they will be able to see the pictures and videos of what we were doing and listen to the songs and music that was around today. Folk music to me is timeless, it will always be in style.

So it's critical to me for these videos to be open source and available to a wide audience for this endeavor to be successful. The other thing I like is that the combination of music and pictures gets us into new audiences, so hopefully the networking opportunites will increase for those that are looking for it.

Now, with all of that being said, there may be opportunites in the future for a commercially produced prospecting show that will begin on PBS. I am not doing it and I probably won't be involved, but I will certainly introduce anyone on ezfolk to these guys if you guys are interested.

To me their is nothing more magical that to create songs and music, I would love to hear that one of these videos helped someone making a living playing music, which is why I like seeing you guys post them on you own websites, or youtube or myspace.

When you go to a rock concert or bluegrass festival you pretty much know what to expect, so it's hard to make something stand out. These little videos are different because they are an interesting subject matter ( who doesn't love gold) and when you hear a song that's it, it's a showcase. You have somebodies attention for that 2 or 3 minute window. If the right person hears it....

Now, enough rambling for now, I just got back from Picker's Supply with my new Gold Tone White Ladye and she's calling my name....

:)

Wow...that's really an honor to be included that collection!

I have the 2007 series (love them all), and now I'll definitely have to backtrack and check out the earlier volumes...which I've never really checked out until now!

Wow..I just saw Ola Belle Reed on the 2005 collection...awesome!

I listened to the sound clip and see that Clarence's father influenced Ricky Scaggs!

Thanks for the link Tinpan! :sleuth:
