I have an opportunity to record a musician soon and his second instrument is a banjo. I have never had the chance to record a banjo and I dont have one to practice with so I need help from all you banjo players out there. Tell me about the mic placement and distance from the banjo you feel gave you the most natural sound. I realize all instruments sound different depending on wood, age etc. and that "natural sound" is different to all of us but just give me a general idea. Tell me about the microphone you used. Large or small condeser or perhaps a dynamic? Thank you all for your help! Wayne

Hi, Wayne: My band mate Ron plays clawhammer banjo with Loose Change & Friends, and I'll describe his sound set up that we use for recording: A condensor microphone (which requires phantom power - a mike pre-amp or a mixer will provide this), mounted on a boom stand, with the end of the mike positioned between 6 and 12 inches away, pointed near the center of the banjo pot. Will nailed the placement thing perfectly. Follow his template and you'll get satisfying results. Depending on how sensitive your mic is, how bright the room is and how normally loud the picker is, you might want to experiment a bit. But that might mean moving in or out a few inches. I've experimented with mics in the pot and contact mics... both sounded awful. Don't waste your time. There are pickups made expressly for the 5-string banjos. I don't know anyone who spent the biggish bucks for one. But I do know that no performing professional I've ever experienced uses one.
