The place is the Brooklyn Ethical Culture Society (which has weekly jams but they're a little out of my mid-week range). They have an annual event that is worth attending if at all possible. Friday evening concert followed by Saturday all day jams and workshops, ending in another concert. I went last year arriving at about noon and stayed until nine PM. Took a great workshop in clawhammer banjo and another in harmonica in old time music. Spent the rest of the time picking with good people from all over. Cost $4 for the day!!! (Assume similar bargain this year.) I intend to go for the Saturday jamming. Look for the gray headed guy with the Vega LN if you go. I was a member of the Baltimore Ethical Society when I lived there; I would love to make this event. Unfortunately, I am otherwise engaged this weekend. Have fun.

Quick Review: It was a great event. I didn't get in for the Friday evening concert but I'm told that I should have. Maybe next year. I arrived an hour early for the Saturday goings on. It was jammed. Weather was chilly and looked like rain, but it cleared and was a great day. Crowd actually overflowed into Prospect Park across the street. Banjos of every type from bluegrass to long necks to open backs to fretless... fiddles, fiddles, fiddles... and everything else including one guy playing autoharp that stunned me. He was doing things on a 21 chord AH that I would suppose would be difficult on a piano. Took a ragtime workshop with Dave Laibman!!! Jammed with great and near great people for six and half hours. Once again, too tired to stay for the evening concerts. Wistful part of it was that so many of the people who came to jam lived close by. Many knew each other. But close by for them is thirty miles of NYC and LI traffic for me. Ah well... Oh there were people from all over, including two fiddlers from Canada, who came from the Toronto area separately and didn't know each other. A little girl of maybe ten with a small fiddle amazed a bunch of us. She'll be the next Ricky Skaggs. Did I mention the cost? $4 for the day... including the concerts. How they do it is anyone's guess. Now back to the folk toys.
