I am copying a post from BHO here because I think it is important to all musicians who use the internet (as well as any who just listen to internet radio.

Please take time to read some of this, and, if you're in the US, send an email to your elected officials in  Washington. It can be done easily through the savenetradio site.

(Hope this is permissible, Richard, but it is an important thing to know about.)

QUOTE:
"As ***** says, depending on what happens in the next 20 days, Sugar in the Gourd, and probably every other Internet "radio" service may be forced to shut down.

You can read more here, and if you're in the US you can let your elected officials know how you feel.

http://www.savenetradio.org/

Without getting too much into the politics of it, my feeling is that this is nothing less than an effort by the BIG record companies and their friends in terrestrial radio (who play whatever their payola-paying friends at the big record companies tell them to play) to absolutely KILL Internet radio in all forms.

David Byrne has more here: http://journal.davidbyrne.com/2007/04/4107_your_gover.html

 "
(posted by the operator of 'Sugar in the Gourd' Old Time music stream).

E-mail has been sent to my Senator and Reps.  This affects all of us IMO, and I wonder if it could trickle down to ezFolk?  I know that a few of the artists here participate in internet radio and it's important to be heard.  The internet is a great tool for indie artists and we need to do what we can to keep it friendly for us.

There is a House Resolution (H.R. 2060) now in front of congress that can help save internet radio:

Please contact your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 2060.

Do it now, before it's too late!

My Representative (Susan Davis, California) actually wrote me back and cited that our State Senator (Dianne Feinstein) has introduced a bill called S. 256.  I read it, and besides reading like a bunch of blooey, what I got from it is they wanted to "level the playing field" and force royalty payments from free radio to artists.

Mike-

First, it's hard to believe that you and I are the only ones interested in this thread!

Next, I tried to read Princess Diane's (I can say that, I used to live in CA even after she was elected), bill, but would need to get the original to compare the changes too.

The SaveInternetRadio site hasn't commented on her bill, but does recommend the HR, so  I have sent my Representative an email, as noted above.

Of course, I never heard from any of my elected congressional delegation from any of my emails. I think the Senators are too busy running for president to worry about their constituents, and Gifford is likely galivanting around the mid-East somewhere.

Brad & Mike... sorry for the lack of interest on my part. This is an issue that doesn't affect ezFolk and I don't really listen to Internet radio myself.

The websites affected would be the ones like Folk Alley, where the music played is commercial releases by professional artists. On ezFolk all of the artists have control over whether or not their songs are made available for our "stations" or "podcasts" or whatever you want to call them, so everything is played on a voluntary basis.

Richard-

This also involves all the NPR netradios, Sugar in the Gourd (which is my favorite OT music source), and many others.

I'm not blaming you, but you would think a lot more of the members here would be concerned. Apparently not.

If you read the link to David Byrnes' journal, you will get an idea of what is at stake.

Don't worry - you're not the only ones interested in the thread. Just little time to comment. I've already contacted folks, put one of the banners up from David Byrne's website on my MySpace page, and am trying to spread the word. It will affect a lot of folks, and it's a cryin' shame!! (and Folk Alley is one of my favorite stations. It would be criminal if it was shut down because of something like this. We don't want to end up with an internet version of Clearchannel being all we can listen to!)

Honestly Brad just because someone has not posted to this thread does not mean they are not interested in the subject or taking action they view as appropriate.  That said, to my way of thinking this is just another plank in the boardwalk of commercial interest, you know the miniscule, if even that big, minority at the top that skim off the blinding majority of the resources.

You’ll know we are on the mend when you see Wal-Mart and Home Depot closing locations and the folks on main street gussying up their shops.  Until then I’m afraid raising the placards or donning the black arm band is like pissing in the ocean.  It gives you a warm feeling inside but doesn’t amount to shite.

Long Live EzFolk.com as this is the concept that will ultimately get things back on the correct track.

Peace,
Ed

I have gotten some feedback on this subject. Websites with unsigned artists such as EZfolk  will not be affected in fact it actually may bring more traffic!!!

“Excuse me for caring.”

Brad,

My comments were not addressed to your bringing this subject up, they were directed to the assumption represented in the following quotes from a couple of your statements:

”I'm not blaming you, but you would think a lot more of the members here would be concerned. Apparently not.”

"Mike-

First, it's hard to believe that you and I are the only ones interested in this thread!"

I just don’t get the modern world I suppose.  Thanks everyone. It’s been a blast.

Peace,
Ed
