While I was re-enabling the private message system I thought I'd get the Mana system rolling as well. Here's an explanation of what it is... What is Mana? WowBB uses an advanced iterative algorithm to determine the most respected users. A user "adds mana" to other users she respects, and the more mana she has, the more the increase in recipients' manas. A user can also change her mind, and remove mana from someone to whom she added mana before. However, the more members a member adds mana to, the less the effect of those mana additions. For example, let's assume that your mana is 3 out of 4. If you want to add mana to someone then you basically add him/her 3 points divided by the number of members to whom you added mana before. If you added mana to one member before, the amount of mana you would add is 3/(1+1)=1.5 points. This is a dynamic process. Whenever someone adds or removes mana, the manas of all members are calculated from scratch. Finally, mana takes the normal distribution rule into account, and it gets increasingly accurate as you get more members.

Hi Richard - I'm so not getting this mana thing. I've read through it, I see that you have some green dots under your name, I understand that it's a way to let someone know that you really like their music or respect them, but the whole giving points, if you give too many you're lessening the value... you lost me. Sorry to sound dense, but I've never seen anything like this before. Is this similar to the kudo thing on MySpace (which I haven't even looked at as of yet...)? Is the purpose mainly a public pat on the back type of thing? Amy

Hey Amy, I don't know any more than you do probably. I just thought we'd try it out and see how it works, and if we like it we'll keep it, and if not we'll dump it. Just something to possibly liven things up around here a little bit.

I understand the concept and how it work. Ah, the sorrow of being a PHP programmer. Knowing how the mana works, it make me feel like I got no life. AmyDK got the the concept though. Basically, you attribute points to people if you like them. However, it got a built in protection against people who would give point to every single member of the board. So the more people you respect, the less your point will be worth. On the flipside: the more respected you are, the more points your worth to other people. Like say you got 4 points under you name, the first person you rate will recieve 4 points, second personw will recieve 2 points and so on.

Richard, thanks for re-enableing the private message function. I hope you don't have anymore problems with sabotage.

Hmmm. This is like automated karma? While that's very Buddhist of you, Richard, it confuses the heck outta me. On my forum, there's a rating system you can use to rank posts or threads, and I can install a user rating ssytem too but haven't. I am guessing this is a user-rating system that's run by the PHP... but WHY?
