My name is Jill Kirby and I am from Granite Falls, NC.  I am married to AJ and we have an 8 month old, Carlee.  Our family is very involved with Southern Applachian music and dancing.  We own a clogging studio and travel all across the Southeast (and beyond) performing and competing.  My grandparents also own Sims BBQ, which is just North of Hickory, and we have live Bluegrass or Old Time there every Friday and Saturday night.  We are working to preserve traditions such as music and dance in this area and put on events such as the Molasses Festival in October (2nd Saturday) and new this year the Hickory Hoedown November 20-22.  We also do a Carolina Traditions show in Taylorsville featuring some very talented Youth Musicians.  I am looking forward to getting to know you guys better and keeping up with some events on the forum.

See ya,
Jill

Hey Jill,

Thanks for joining us! I'm originally from Hickory and remember going to Sims BBQ way back when it first opened. I'll vouch for it beng a great place!

I moved to Gastonia 30 years ago, which was back when Sims opened, and haven't been back there, but my good friend Michael Fox (who is a member of this site) has talked to me about it several times and I think he and Richard Shook still go there often and maybe play there sometimes (I'm not positive about that). I thought you might possibly know them. I think they still go by the name "Possum Holler String Band."

Anytime you have special events coming up feel free to post them in our forums. We have people from all over and mostly from places other than Western North Carolina, but we have some users who are in your area.

Hey, wow, what a small world!  Richard is a good friend of our family, and we spoke to Michael at Andrew's wedding, Richard's son, just a couple of weekends ago.  We were talking about the Hickory Hoedown that we are planning.  The Shooks and their friends are great people! And yes, the Possum Hollar Old Time String Band.  I smile every time I say it!  They actually played at the BBQ after Andrew's wedding.
The BBQ probably hasnt changed much, it was 30 in June, I just turned 31, so I've been there my whole life and cant think of many changes, and that's how we like it!  Hope you can come up and see us sometime!  Let me know if you are planning to come!  Our place really tries to keep it "old timey" and when people need a dose of NC culture, that's where they come!  Thanks again for the reply Richard, and I look forward to staying in touch through EZfolk!  See ya,
Jill

Hey, it IS a small world. Richard and Andrew have some music here on ezFolk and Richard is Michael's partner in building the Dulcijo, which is sold through ezFolk.

Also, I've known Richard's wife Debbie ever since junior high school. We were in the 9th grade together then went to high school together as well. They are good people... and talented too!

I'd like to interrupt this nice reunion to offer a welcome from a Massachusetts Yankee. :) Glad to have you here and look forward to hearing more from you.

Lol, Yankeeness!  That's a good one!
Thanks Gary, nice to meet you! Been a while since I've been on but I am looking forward to being on more!
Richard, the Shook's and my family hung out this past weekend outside of Cherokee at Smokemont, and we had some interesting Old Time/Bluegrass discussions!  We also heard a good old time band while we were there, and of course Richard and Andrew entertained us around the campfire!  It was great!  Talk to you guys soon!
Jill

Hey, y'all!

I'm new here - my first day. Your NC conversation caught my attention since I lived in Morganton, in Burke County, for about 11 years. Been back here in Pittsburgh, PA for a long time now, about the past 16 or so years.

Coming here (to ezFolk and to this NC conversation) makes me think about our old friend, Burke County's own Bobby Denton, banjo player, instrument maker, gun maker, furniture maker, and more - an extraordinarily talented man! I'm trying to recall the name of the cowboy character on the Charlotte tv station (WBTV?)(Fred somebody? (Fred Kirby? Really, I'm thinking his name was Fred Kirby...)) who had Bobby as a regular playing banjo on his show many years ago...probably before you were born, Kirby... I didn't know Bobby Denton at that (tv program) time. I met him in the early 1980's through my exhusband who frequented the gun shop where Bobby was creating handcrafted masterpieces, not of the musical kind. After the gun shop closed Bobby went on to be a master carver at Drexel Furniture, I think it was. It breaks my heart to think about the furniture making industry having moved over to China in more recent years, with all the jobs lost in western NC. ...and all the textile jobs, too. I applied for jobs in various furniture and textile places while I was living there, but never got hired! Ended up in a part-time job-ette at Western Piedmont Community College.

I am just now trying to learn how to play an instrument for the first time in my life - well, I'll begin to try to learn once the ukulele arrives next week! :D   My family heritage didn't include the joy of music making, I'm sorry to say; not in the same way that so many families in NC experience. (We did often sing the Marine Corps and Army Hymns in the car with my dad, however!) I'll never forget my first Thanksgiving in Morganton when our brand new neighbors invited us for Thanksgiving dinner with their extended family. After dinner we retired to the parlor where the grandma proceeded to bang out hymns on the piano. For me, it was pure magic. For them, I think it was as natural as the home-canned green beans and other vegetables from their garden that we'd just had at the table.

I hope you don't mind my reminiscing. I grew to love the warmth of the NC people and the foothills/mountain culture while I lived there. Not this year, but maybe in the future, I'll make it down to your festival in Hickory. It sounds great. Good luck!

Wow, what a great story, how you describe the people from around here is very accurate! I am very proud to live in Western NC. We will try to make our festival an annual event, so remember the weekend before Thanksgiving next year.
It is Fred Kirby! We used to watch him on the LIttle Rascals!
We need some people like Bobby to give us advice on our event, any would be welcomed!
Thanks for the reply and it's so nice to meet all of you!
