Hi, I play guitar (hamfisted style) and a bit of blues harp. I'm looking to get a Banjo to play Bluegrass / apalachian types of music but not sure what to begin with (there seem to be so many choices). Any ideas for a relatively cheap but not too shoddy banjo for a beginner...are Barnes and Mullins any good for instance? Do i need a five string four? Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks. John

For sure, you'll want a 5-string for BG and/or Appalachian-style (OT, usually Clawhammer or 2 or 3 finger OT styles) music. BlueGrass music usually requires a banjo with a resonator, and a thumb pick and 2 finger picks. Clawhammer usually is done on an openback, and doesn't need picks. That said, both styles of music can be played on either type of instrument. I suggest looking at the Deering Goodtime line (thats where I started) or the Gold Tone banjos. Both have good, relatively inexpensive beginners models that will serve well until you feel you need to move up. I had no plans on using anything other than my Goodtime unti I was told by a Chuck Lee banjo I test-played that I wasn't leaving without it! Welcome to the banjo, and to ezFolk!
