Hi, I'm Mike Walker, co-founder of a new jam site, found at http://www.hhtmp.com. I'm relatively new to playing music, and made every mistake you can when learning to jam with others. I coudn't find a really comprehensive book on jamming do's and don'ts and things like transposing or how to play doo-wop progressions. Luckily, I'm friends with somebody who knows all these things, Martha Haehl, and we've written a new book on the topic: Play Well With Others, How To Jam Like a Pro. We hope you come to our site so you can download our free section, or participate in our blog. Our current topic is: "What are your favorite jam songs?" Later, Mike

hey Mike, Sounds interesting. How about "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat." I'm learning ukulele and am working on some blues oriented stuff that I came up with on my own for practise. I like all kinds of music but jazz, funk, r&b & blues is right up there. There's a bit of folk slant in my taste and I like some old 20s gems like 5 foot 2 and would like to learn some Fats Waller. Some of my own stuff seems to mimic young John Lee Hooker on ukulele. i've got a big imagination : ) I realized tonight that I need a bass. Quick. Cheap. And I'm gonna try to learn it until someone better steps into the position. I want to play live, in front of people or on youtube. That's about it. Looking at cheap basses on ebay now. Maybe fretless. Too adventurous for me? Five strings? Too many, too few?? There's a cheap acoustic/electric (around $150) that I could treat like a "project repair" and replace pickup, fix frets, upgrade bridge, nut and whatever as necessary. Being able to play unplugged is a bonus for practising.... Anything under $200 should be fine for a beginner.... any suggestions?? I'm throwing a lot out there, I know... I can't wait to find out how Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat goes. And the cool thing about 5 foot 2 is, once you learn that, there are other tin pan alley songs that have the same progression. Cheers! Mike

sano wrote: hey Mike, Last year during the Music123.com clearance sale prompted by its merger with Musician's Friend, I got a fantastic deal on a standard sized Washburn electric bass with a Randall 30 watt bass amp; the whole package was $99. (I doubt there is such a deal on the planet anymore.) But... I haven't had time to learn to play it well, yet. The bass guitar is a huge contrast to the uke - the steel strings look like aircraft cables by comparison, and they all have windings, and what is considered good string action on a bass is much higher than you may be used to. The scale of a standard bass is 34" and is much longer than a guitar's 25.5" scale; although there are some short scale basses available that have a 30" or 31" scale, but these are usually more expensive. You also have to learn the fretboard, because the bass is a single note only instrument - no chords. Acoustic bass guitars really do not have a sufficiently large body size to get enough volume or audible low end when unplugged in a jam session, so these basses are all equipped with a pickup for amplification. They also have the same 34" scale, but the body size (same as the Gibson super jumbo guitar) is huge, about 17" or 18" at the lower bout and 5" thick. If you're looking for a starter acoustic bass, Dean makes one for about US $150: http://wwbw.com/Dean-PlayMate-EAB-Acoustic-Bass-Guitar-i124271.music ![]() Behringer makes a 15 watt practice bass amp for US $60: Behringer BT108 combo bass amp http://wwbw.com/Behringer-BT108-Bass-Combo-Amp-i156903.music ![]()

Last night on the uke I was working through a simple long chord progression that I practise with, over and over, just playing with my strumming. I started to be able to hear the bass lines, strangest thing. I thought "I need a bass on this," and just then I thought, "maybe I should work on that." I suppose there's some amount of transfer among any instruments; maybe bass playing can help my ukulele skills somehow. Thanks for the suggestions for gear. I'm gonna check out the Dean and also that amp (that's the one I was thinking of!) Sano PS: This Epiphone El Segundo looks nice and has a slightly shorter 32" scale" http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=310062356327 Gee, sorry Mike for highjacking this thread... now back to the the original topic!
