My name is Joe and I'm originally from Greenville, SC. Although home is in the Appalachian Mtns...in Virginia. I love string instruments and the music produced by them. I recently purchased my first Banjo and had it shipped to Iraq, which is my temporal home and has been for 9 months already. If anyone could give me any pointers on the simple tuning processes, chords, finger placement, any tips for this rookie would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, and Have a good un'

You will probably want to tune your banjo to "Open G" tuning, which is gDGBD, probably the most common tuning for 5-string banjo.  Check out Patrick Costello's instructional videos:

Cheap Thrills:

Banjo Setup:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yiilZ-PD1uQ

In the first clip, Patrick takes a look at two low-priced banjos & an affordable resonator guitar.

In the second clip Patrick goes over, as the title implies, banjo setup.

The two videos should give you an idea of what to look for - and what to do in terms of setup of a banjo.
