Just bought my first banjo and now I'm totally overwhelmed and confused as to where to go, what to do with it.  I never realized how many different ways to tune and play etc. so ..........

What is recommended, I play at the guitar (not real good, but have a little knowledge & experiance with it) and want to "compliment" my friends guitar playing with some banjo added to them.

Where do I start?  What's the best way to tune for accompaniment of the guitars (old tyme country music from the 50's to the 70's mostly)

Thanks

Bob

I'm also a guitar player, and I don't play 5-string banjo, because I would have to learn a new tuning, but I have tuned my 4-string tenor banjo to the upper 4 strings of a guitar, DGBE (this is called "Chicago tuning"), which allows you to play most guitar chords that you already know, minus the 2 lowest bass strings.  I don't generally just strum chords on it, however, I pick the melody, play arpeggiated chords, and I sometimes mix in some strums.  It adds tonal variety to folk and country jam sessions which are heavily dominated by guitars all playing the same chords.

Since you have already purchased a banjo (and I'm almost certain that it is a 5-string banjo), you will probably want to tune your banjo to "Open G" tuning, which is gDGBD, probably the most common tuning for 5-string banjo.  Check out Patrick Costello's instructional videos:

Cheap Thrills:

Banjo Setup:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yiilZ-PD1uQ

In the first clip, Patrick takes a look at two low-priced banjos & an affordable resonator guitar.

In the second clip Patrick goes over, as the title implies, banjo setup.

The two videos should give you an idea of what to look for - and what to do in terms of setup of a banjo.
