My name is Jon. I have been trying to learn to play the five string banjo bluegrass style for years. I finally got up the courage to go to a local weekly jam session. I mostly hide in the corner of the circle and play slow rolls "reading" the guitar players fingers to know when to change chords. My playing has imporved and the group hasn't changed the meeting place without telling me so I guess I'm not sounding so bad that they want to get rid of me. (It helps if you are the only banjo player!) I look forward to using the resources and networking on this site.

I live in Fairbanks and the Pioneer Park Pickers meet every Tuesday night from 7:00 to about 9:00 in the theater at Pioneer Park (Alaskaland). There can be as many as 18 people there or only five or six. There are about eight guitar players, three fiddle players, three mandolin players, and an occasional bass player or harmonica player-- and me, hiding in the corner with my banjo. Skill levels range from semi-pro (in a performing group) to newbs. Most in the group are pretty tolerant of beginners as long as their playing doesn't throw the group off. If you're in the area, drop in. ~Jon
