I know of three ongoing open mics:
Asti Wines in Northport, Suffolk County (biweekly). THey have a singer/songwriter biased environment that never attracted me. Google them if you're interested.

Cool Benz in Huntington, also Suffolk County but near the Nassau line, has a bi-weekly open mic. It's pretty much the same crowd as Asti.

Sea Cliff Coffee House in Sea Cliff, Nassau County has an on again, off again Tuesday night open mike. There is wide open. Stand up comics, folk singers, poets, singer/songwriters, jammers of every flavor. But it happens when they feel like having it. Always call first. But if anyone does plan on going, drop me an email, I live close by. EDITED 7/5/08 NO LONGER IN OPERATION

I stongly suggest checking the exact address, times and dates before you make the trip.

LITMA (Long Island Traditional Music Association) has two or three onging music events. One is geared for musicians and I attend when I can. It's in a private home in central Suffolk County but it is a quality afternoon in a welcoming environment.  They have a sing-along event and some others that never captured my attention. The details and contact information are googleable under LITMA.

The Bluegrass Club of Long Island (link below) has a monthly jam (1st Sunday of the month) in Smithtown.

Eastenders Coffee House out in Riverhead did have an open mic night until this past April, but still featrues live acoustic music.

And of course there's always AcousticLongIsland.com (http://www.acousticlongisland.com/)

Edit: Not sure why that first link didn't work but then again I pretty much fail at the interwebz.

I'm lousy at geography so I don't know how close any of the listings are to you, but openmikes.org has a buttload of open mikes listed in New York.

The only one I found that I would guess is close to you is a songwriter one every Sunday at Dominie's Hoek in Long Island City.

Can you check the bluegrass club url? I get an"address not found" message.

Long Island City is a section of Queens Coutny (NYC) that is on the end of the edge of Queens just across the East River from Manhattan. I live on the northern edge of Nassau County. About an hour's drive from that songwriter's session. Except I'm not a song writer. Thanks anyway.

Well the Bluegrass club meets on the first Sunday of the month, I'm told. But it's a 75-90 drive each way for a two hour session. And their website is either down, 404 or whoever is the sysop never pays attention. After leaving numerous e-mails, I gave up on them. I'm not about to go that far without knowing that they're on that day.

Long Island City is as far in the other direction. There are a number of jams and open mikes in Manhattan and Brooklyn. But I've heard they are cliquey (sp?) and tend to be tough rooms.

I prefer relaxed jamming to gladitorial combats.

It riles me that my county, with almost two million people can't do better. I had a listing on the Open Jams website for over a year and was only contacted twice. And one of the people tried to sell me insurance. (I didn't buy any.)
