I've been experimenting with a synthetic banjo head material since last May.  It's a form of Nomex that is intended for use in archiving specimens and art objects, and it's supplied in a large roll.  I posted information on this material in January on the Banjo Hangout forum, and there's been some interesting discussion @ http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=104102

On the plus side, the material can be installed on any size pot using tension hoop & flesh hoop hardware, and the feedback on sound quality & appearance have been pretty positive.  On the minus side, it's a little challenging to install.

If you're interested in trying out this material, send me an e-mail.  For lack of a better name, I'm calling the material Yellowstone banjo head after my jewelry business, Yellowstone Jewelry.
