How come when I play the higher notes on the erhu, it makes all these horrible squeaky noises? D: My playing on the notes from 1-2(uhh octave?, with a dot on top of the 2) on D key sounds fine. Anything higher than that it sounds like a mouse dying. How do I fix this problem? :( Is there a certain way of pressing the strings/bowing when playing higher pitched notes?

I have been playing the erhu for about 5 months btw.

Is your damper pad too tight? When I complained to my teacher about the squeaks my erhu was making, he took out the felt damper pad, cut a piece off of it, refolded it, and put it back; the squeaks were gone. If the pad is the right thickness, you will be able to slide it under the strings without loosening them. I was trying to cure the squeaks by brute force, but it was the gentle touch that worked.

Tze, I had a similar problem, and I solved it using a different method. I noticed that the grooves in the bridge (where the strings sit) is too shallow. So the strings looked as it they protruded out of the top of the brige.

I wondered why. If you look at say a guitar, the strings sit snuggly way into their respective grooves.

I experimented by deepening the grooves so that the strings sit deeper, below the top level of the bridge. This improves the clarity of the higher notes.  My guess is that deeper grooves hold the strings in position better. But be careful not to cut the grooves too width; you want them deep, but not wide.

btw, you probably want to do this if you have spare bridges as backup.

Sure, by adjusting the damper or bridge the squeaky noises can be lowered.  On the other hand, you had better check the way of bowing. The angle and the speed of the movement of the bow, and the pressure to the string may also cause the noises. The same way of bowing may make noise at higher pitches, though the noise does not come out at low pitches. There is the case that the professional player does not make any noises even with the same erhu, with which the beginners make noises.
