I am in the midst of whittling out another erhu and am wondering what type of finish to apply to the raw wood to get a nice "wet look"  appearance to it.    I probably have heard here and there to stay away from shellacs and varnishes.....  not certain about that though.   I would like to know what type of clear finish to start with,  this one isnt already finished , I am not wondering about waxing or cleaning the exterior. the purple heart wood now has a dull finish to it from sanding,  rubbing with a cloth isnt helping any,   I need to add some oil or something.   a photo of it makes it appear more purplish than it really is,  some trickery of the camera I guess.  When the wood was new it was a very bright rich purple color but with sawing and planing and sanding that shiny purple disintegrated into the browns showing through.

What are you planning to do regarding the snakeskin?

this one is of the purpleheart wood.   it is extremely hard material !   tough to work with too.   I have this one planed to a more reasonable thickness,  about 5/16"  at its thickest areas.

Good to see your still perfecting your talent there.

Looks great Den. You modeled it from a Beijing erhu?

hello Den,

Before finishing it, most erhus have a carving at the front. There where the(snake)skin is glued to the wood. So the skin runs equal with the surface of the wood. If you know what I mean.?
So my advice would be; look for the skin you want to use and make the carving. After that I should start with finishing the wood. (I think waxing is great, but I should ask some specialist and look what is done to high end erhu's.)

I asked at the local hardware store and his favorite is "velvit oil"   so I gave it a whirl. a clear oil with a mystery additive.  and it does feel velvety to the touch.  It turned the purplish red   to a dark beet red.  looks alright  .

Sw ,  ya , I sized it the same dimensions as a beijing,  and the body style will be an offshoot with a couple of my own thrown in for good measure.   I never thought to let in a relief for the thickness of whatever skin I come up with. ... too late,  I already have the ends heavily tapered.

I believe he is talking about the groove for the trim around the skin. I was told to use varnish on my sandalwood one. Try some 320 wet/dry paper or fine. A wood that hard should shine on its own, fine steel wood works too. Give me some time, I may come up with a skin yet. Also be careful not to get too much oil around where the skin needs to glue.
