Hi everybody,

I play some instruments and two days ago I got my erhu from Sigapore (I'm in Italy).

I really anyway need some help in order to clearly understud how to tune my erhu in the right way.

Below wath I understoo and where I'd like yto get your perspective.

Just to be sure I undertood correctly:

The inner string is:
1) the thicker string,
2) linked to the lower peg (the one closest to the resonator)
3) tuned D

while,

The outer string is:
1) the thinner one
2)is linked to the higher peg (the farest from the resonator)
3)tuned A.

Am I correct?

Knowing one string is tuned A and one D are do we mean that D is the lower in the octave of the 2 or that A is the lower ?

I'll really apprechiate your help.

Thanks in advance, best regards.

Marco

Welcome to the forum, Marco, and congratulations on your new erhu.

Regarding your questions, you have it almost correct:

The inner string is:
1) the thicker string, CORRECT
2) linked to the lower peg (the one closest to the resonator)SHOULD BE UPPER PEG
3) tuned D CORRECT

while,

The outer string is:
1) the thinner one CORRECT
2)is linked to the higher peg (the farest from the resonator) SHOULD BE LOWER PEG
3)tuned A. CORRECT

It may help to look in detail at the photo in the following link:

Note how the strings loop off of the pegs.

Best wishes,

David

I had posted this a few years back when this forum had just started and perhaps I should go over this again on string positioning and tuning.
The large string or D string is located at the top peg and this is for the reason that the thicker string needs to be equal with the thinner string for the purpose of tension and flexing.
There is a good reason why it was design this way and this is the reason.
Gages on the string sizes varies from each manufacture I think Allenz pointed this out in one of his postings.

Outside string lower peg rapped around clockwise on the peg, smallest string, tuned to A at  440 standard

Inside sting upper peg rapped around counter clockwise on peg, larger string tuned at D at  440 standard

Refer back to http://www.eason.com.sg for additional guidance on this subject

This is where you should begin please try to understand the theory behind methods and design this way it will help you not only understand it better but help you remember as well.
Each musician has his own perception of how they want their instrument to sound and tuning is just one of the ways to manipulate this sound, personally I do not use standard like many others however, anyone starting to learn should use it as a bases.
Take a quick look at the two pictures of Erhu's below notice the big difference between the distance the strings are anchored on each instrument.

God Bless
