Hi everyone! I just joined this forum because I got a new Erhu and I don't really know much about the maintenance and care this instrument requires. So if there is any really basic knowledge that all erhu players should know in order to take care of their instrument I would be really grateful if you could post that info here. Thanks!

welcome zere0 you have come to a good place for anything erhu , from serious to fun and everything in between. there are hundreds of posts here and cover a very wide range of subjects related to erhu help. Take some time to read through all of the posts here, you will be surprised to discover how much is already been discussed. Not all the helps are logically behind the topic heading, so you would do well to go through each topic and you will discover lots of things you might not even had thought of yet. Den

What is proper bowing and playing technique??? I go the bow hold down and I can play the inner string just fine, but when I try to play the outer string it doesn't sound as strong or as full as in the inner string. Any suggestions??? Am I placing the erhu wrong or is my hand technique messed up???

I also have a couple of questions about cases. When I recieved my erhu it came in a case that didn't match the erhu because the erhu originally didn't have a case. What kind of case should I get. I won't be traveling with my erhu and it will mostly just be kept at home.

I think the most important one is to play the erhu often and another thing is to loosen the strings and move the bridge up after the playing.

Can you post some pictures? That way we can get a better idea. Few close-up pictures of the qianjin, the bridge, and the pegs, from various angles, would be very helpful!

The case looks like a normal erhu case to me, I've got one that's the same. If the erhu is loose when it's inside the case, you can stick some pieces of foam rubber to the inside of the case which should stop the erhu shaking around inside the case. It also helps to protect the erhu because these old-fashion cases often don't have any padding inside. The bow hair should be resting on the erhu when you're playing, your right arm shouldn't be holding the bow as if it is in mid-air. Yeah its an old type of erhu case that rocks when you carry it around. Interesting, the velvet covered baseplate. They don't make such things anymore. The bridge can be adjusted a little lower and seems to be very slightly skewed to the right. The bow looks over tightened and its suppose to be between the 2 strings.

I can see the photos on the Windows Live site. The erhu looks okay, although the bridge could be better centered. Did you remove the bow to take the photos? It is hard to tell, but in Photo 5 it does not appear that the bow hair is between the strings as it should be. Best wishes, David

photo 5 looks also like the bow itself is dangerously close to touching the A string itself. and try lowering the contact spot of the bow hair to the string. glide the string on the resonator box itself.

Yeah I figured out that I had put the bow between the strings the wrong way. Now that I have put it in the right way it is all right!
