The qianjin needs to be tight enough. Check for instructions elsewhere on this forum for tying the qianjin/qianjing. If you google on tie qianjin, you should find some useful information. Check out the videos on the Eason website: http://www.eason.com.sg/resources/resources.jsp Make sure that the strings do not cross each other from where they are tied on the bottom of the resonator, over the bridge, through the qianjin, and to the tuning pegs. There should be a felt of foam pad under the strings between the bridge and the resonator bottom. Regarding notation, the numerical (jianpu) notation is proper for Chinese music, although I have seen some music books in staff notation. If you want to play Chinese music, then it is really worthwhile learning the numeric notation, and is quite easy. A good place to start is the article on jianpu at http://www.wikipedia.org . From time to time, I run across websites with scores of Chinese music in staff notation. If you are resourceful with search engines like Google, they can be found. It does help to know Chinese, but you can get by with translation tools. If you don't really care to play Chinese music, then use whatever staff score you want. There are "fake" books of tunes available at music stores, and even on-line. Some you have to pay for and some are free. Scores for flute should work fine for erhu, since the range of the flute does not extend more than a few steps below an erhu, as it is typically tuned. Best wishes, David

and also you can check to see that the strings are wound onto the pegs in opposing directions, that the bridge is pretty well centered on the skin, that the strings are actually set into the grooves of the bridge... I dont believe there should be a gap between the strings at the point where they leave the qianjin. let us know how it turns out as you check things over. Den

Has the situation improved with all the recommendations? Also try moving the qian jing higher up and make sure the bow tension is not tight like the violin or cell bows. : ) May bet1wibb2 wrote: icant seem to get any more than 2 notes (D and A) out of my Erhu when i touch the strings the noise is just shrieky, can anyone help, also i want to play music with proper notes (not mumerical) because i play clarinet so it doesnt help :| please help

Here is a website that Carlos Alden found a while back. There are very many tunes each with jianpu and staff notation. The titles are in Chinese, and not all of the tunes will be easy to play on erhu, but you should be able to find something. The price is right. http://www.myscore.org/minge.htm If you cannot read the Chinese, you could use language tools from Google. Best wishes, David

I think the problem may be due to the fact that you don't apply the rosin to the bow hair, even the basic model of Chinese erhu wouldn't have that problem.

Thank you David!!! I wanted to start learning to read in staff notations for my erhu playing, but I only have jianpu music. This website has both, which will really helps. I tried searching online for Chinese music in staff notations, but couldn't find a thing. So, I'm really glad to find this post from you. Yay! : ) May davidmdahl wrote: Here is a website that Carlos Alden found a while back. There are very many tunes each with jianpu and staff notation.
