As for myself, at the moment, I believe my favorite is the one labeled erquan.  Is the size of it slightly larger than the typical erhu?

Den

The erquan selection is from a standard erhu with erquan strings, tuned to G/D. This erhu, by maker WNZ (via Eason), is a remarkable instrument. I have not played any other zhonghus but this one seems middling, neither terrible nor terrific.

Thanks for the comments.

Best wishes,

David

David...your effort is lauded! Thank you for your audio files. I like your Zhonghu tone.

What mic and sofware did you use to record it?

Thanks! For recording, I used a Sony ECM-MS957 and Sony MZ-RH1 minidisc recorder. I converted to mono and lower bit-rate with CoolEdit.

Well, that was a start. I hope to do better next time.

Best wishes,

David

I have a question about the scale length others are using on their instruments. A source I found (and have since lost) gave the scale length for erhu as 380-400 cm, and said that a zhonghu scale length would be 15% to 20% longer.

The table I did in Excel gives the following scale lengths for erhu and zhonghu:

           15%    20%
380     437     456
390     449     468
400     460     480

I have my erhu set at 400 and my zhonghu set at 460. How do these measurements compare with what you all are using?

Dennis

May,

I just put on a set of Er Quan strings on my erhu.  It really sounds nice.  You ought to give it a try.   The problem for me is that I will need another erhu for my regular strings.

Sung Wah, thanks for your recommendation.

Nice going David! I can hear your teacher's Cantonese influence from the slides and trills.

Thanks very much Will! Now I will need to contact Sung Wah for some some erquan strings too!

I don't know if my spare erhu can support the erquan strings as well as yours. But, only one way to find out...I'll just have to give it a try.

Did you start looking for another erhu yet?  ;)
