Problem solved. When I get a new bow I'll take it to Tsundaga for the final word on how it sounds.

Well the verdict is in. Master says the "D" string sounds great, good tone good volume. However, when you go past octive on the "A" string sound quality starts to fade. The skin is not stiff enough to carry the resonance. Maybe try another kind of skin. Does anyone know where I can get a piece of python skin?

reber,
This might sound like a bad joke, but I guess they are not kidding when they say you can really find anything on eBay. If you type python skin hide, you get a few results from the Philippines.

But I don't know if the oversensitive CIT*S might have something to say about actually getting it into the States.

Cheers~

found something else out about fish skin. It doesn't do well in humidity. Guess I need to tie a lamb out in the back yard and catch a BIG snake. Have two needing skins now.

I'm liking the work on the finial on the top end.   Did you rough in the shape with a bandsaw?    what type of material is the top end of... bone, plastic???  Is it simply butt jointed or did you pin it with a dowel?

sad to hear about the fish skin.   would it even be feasable to soak it while installed,  and let it dry out in the hot sunlight?   that might shrink it enough to crush the resonator.

Keep the posts coming,  it's always fun to see and hear what the rest of the group is up to for ideas and inovative stuffs.

If you'd like to try your hand at stretching a python skin, just plan a vacation trip to Florida:

Hey! Burmese python skins for all ! Even the right species for erhu, eh.

OK - anyone in Florida wanting to set up an erhu shop - here's your chance :-)

update on the fish skin erhu
I figured it couldn't be ruined so I tried sealing it. First I cleaned it with naptha to remove any oils in it, then thinned varnish about 4/1 and coated it inside and out. Let it stand for a few minutes and recoated, wiping it off each time. So far it seems to be holding up and not affected the sound. The humidity hasn't dropped, maybe even gone up a bit. I put a peice of bone on the solid nut, works but gives it a higher tone.

Reber,
Check out this combined metal alloy Erhu, instead of snake skin, the resonator surface is combined metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PirLRVmAvkg

Maybe it would be another option to fish skin. I don't have much for an ear for Erhu, but the sound sounds a little dull (or dead) to me on a few notes..

now that is interesting.   I couldnt hear any  notes sounding dead or something,  lots of other guys near-by warming up kinda drowned out his sound now and then though.    I shoulda tried some more ideas for materials when I was experimenting,  I had tried a couple from "tin"   but they were really dead sounding.   I have plans for another build soon,  and will be doing some more experimenting then for sure.   open for ideas for that already !

Thanks AllenZ! I got an email address to see if I can't get some more info on that skin. My guess it is 400 series stainless. The stamping on it helps give it some rigidity. Have to go see if I can find some stainless shim stock.

Go for it guys!

They also flash their organization website, hkco.org, in video. Maybe you can talk to them about it!
