Here is one with the skin on it. Trying a catfish skin, they peal off with a pliers so has to be tough.

I am quite anxious to learn how the catfish skin works on this.  It might have its own distinct sound , and would be good to know how that had been obtained.

more pics?  and techniques for building and assembling?  I bet this will generate lots of interest.

I googled a search and found that the kamancha is a persion version of an erhu, with 4 strings.  and they use ,   a fish skin on the sound box.

Where do you get catfish skin? I never knew fish skin would be tough enough for this task. Well done!

At least the fish skin won't be something totally new, thats an encouragement.
A freinf bought a house with a pond and they were telling me about all the big fish in it. I needed a catfish skin and so...

Looks like its going good, give us a Youtube performance clip in the future! I'm looking forward to hear a catfish skin~!

Are you planning to laquer it up for that Erhu wood look?

When I make another I'll take pictures through all of it. Have another body put together, it is osage orange. It is a very dense hard wood, will probably have a bright sound. Very pretty yellow gold colored wood, polishes without wax. Next will be Black Locust (similar to small leaf sandalwood). Think I'll finish these two before I start on it though.

reber,
Do you have pictures of your skinning process? I'm interested on how you got that catfish skin on there.

Did you do some kind of tanning or drying process to enforce the skin's toughness? In addition, how did you find the right tension on the catskin when your stretched it over the resonator?

AllenZ,

I made a clamp, stapled the skin around the outside, pressed the body into it, tightened the clamp, let dry several days. The skin will shrink a bit and harden when it drys. It is also a defleshed raw skin.

I'm glad to learn of this innovative clamp,  just last night I noticed that one of the seams of my erhu is parting.  This clamp style should be perfect for me to re-glue  that joint.

I made one of these setups for it. It works but, think I will go ahead and make some longer pins for the tuners and use string, sounds better if I put my finger on top of the nut. The skin seems to work fine, tone is nice and even, just my bow is ready for the trash. (should have a new couple new ones some time this week)

a wooden qianjin,  if it sounds better with your finger over the top of it,  would it work to wrap a couple strands of cord around the outside of it to replace your finger?  It sure looks good so far and I am certain that you will get it tweaked to your satisfaction.   eason dot com has an excellant video for tying the qianjin when you get to far as to try that out.   How well is the skin tension holding up with the strings tightened up?
