Although this article isn't strictly about erhu, I thought it would be of interest: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090414/ennew_afp/chinamusicculture_20090414161501

Ah, looks interesting. The Japanese is perserving their own form of Tang Dynasty Music called 雅楽 (Gagaku, which is also called Togaku 唐樂, Tang Dynasty Music), Columbia University actually has an orchestra of that.

There was a CD of Tang music out some years ago called "Musique Ancienne de Chang'an":![]() I gather it's reconstructed/revived music played by conservatory professionals from Xi'an. I don't know if the music played by the group in the article sounds similar to what's on the CD, or whether they are an continuation of an "authentic" tradition (the article mentions there were 50 groups 60 years ago) or if they play reconstructed/revived music.

OK. I've had a look at the CD notes. It says in 1985 members of the Xi'an Conservatory of Music started to learn and preserve the music from old village traditional music musicians; only a small number have kept the music alive and handing down the manuscripts generation by generation. And that conservatory teachers received regular training from the traditional musicians so that this music may be bought back to life piece by piece. The CD is from 1991. It appears there is a CD of this music played by village musicians, it's called "Xi'an Drums Music" on the Hugo label (HRP 758-2). I actually bought the CD more than 10 years ago but never really got round to listening to it! Just ripped it to Flac to my computer. A mini-review is here, about halfway down the discography section: http://www.roughguides.com/website/travel/Destination/content/default.aspx?titleid=88&xid=idh227222744_1201 it's from The Rough Guide to World Music, the chapter on China is written by Stephen Jones of London University and is an excellent read on Chinese traditional music in general. There are links to the rest of the chapter at the bottom of the page. Last edited on Thu Jun 18th, 2009 06:45 pm by huqiner |
