....not made with 4 strings?? There is a 4 string  Erhu variant like the GEHU which is tuned and played like a normal Cello. The bow is detached unlike Erhu.

With more than 500 years of history...I'm amazed no one even thought of making a 4 string erhu. Think of the possibilities with a 4 string erhu!

Someone should make one that can be played like a mini Cello....but it's really a 4 string Erhu that's placed on the lap.

...to add...though the GEHU does not sound anything like an Erhu, someone should make the 4 string erhu that still sounds like a normal 2 string erhu in terms of tone.

savange1, thanks...but if you look properly, Sihu only doubles the strings...meaning that the inner 2 strings are tuned 'D'...same like a normal erhu.

What will be really good is a 4 String Erhu that is tuned like a Voolin -G, D, A, E....and the bow is detached like a Violin yet it still retains the wonderful Erhu tone.

Surely it's not that hard to build one??

An erhu with four strings would not be a erhu. There are stick fiddles all over Asia that are played on top of the strings rather than between, as with the huqin family. Each approach has its advantages and challenges. I personally prefer the huqin method.

I think that the erhu is an elegant design, already at a high state of development, and is well-suited for the range of notes usually played in Chinese music. If the body is much larger, then you have a zhonghu, which has different characteristics than the erhu.

I have never played a gehu, but I understand that it is not an entirely successful instrument. It is used primarily in ensembles of exclusively Chinese instruments. The cello and bass viol are more pragmatic choices.

Best wishes,

David

I removed the outter string and played the inner string like a Cellist would. I tell you....it still sounds great! Now if someone can just act on my idea...we can have a 4 string Erhu that plays like a mini-Cello.

Imagine the possiblities! WHatever a VIolinist can play, the 4 string Erhu can too...as the tuning for the erhu will be exactly like a Violin's.

I find it hard to believe that no one thought of this and made one. It can have a bigger body like an Erquan Erhu to cater to 4 strings so that it can retain the unique Er hu tone.
