Today I attended my first erhu lesson, and it was great.  I got to see so many different erhus and aspiring erhu players.  I couldn't resist the temptation to play with them! There was an octagonal erhu with round sound window that sang in a very earthy tone, and someone brought a gaohu too, which had a magnificent dragonhead carving and a mellow voice.  The instruction for the beginners started with bowing the outer string, and the classroom was filled with the all-too-familiar blackboard-scratching sound, coming through a variety of different notes and timbre, while the intermediate class quietly rehearsing their homework while using silencers; it brought a lot of memories back.  I am just so glad to find an instructor and a group of like-minded erhu enthusiasts to share my joys with.

I am in the DC area; the class is actually in Rockville, Maryland. There are about 20-25 people in the class, with about 7-10 of them being in the intermediate group. And that's just the 1:30pm class; there is also a 4pm class as well. The erhu community here is vibrant.

The erhu lesson I attend is offered at a Chinese church / Chinese School. The location is

4414 Muncaster Mill Rd,
Rockville, MD 20853

Website:
http://www.cbcm-cs.cbcm.org

The class is held on Sunday afternoon, at 1:30pm and 4:00pm. You may want to come for the 4pm class as that's the intermediate class (I'm assuming that you've been playing a while now; as of now the beginner's class is going to practice nothing but bowing the open strings for TWO STRAIGHT MONTHS). If you speak Chinese, you will fit right in. If not, I think you still will not have any problems, as the people are friendly and it's always good to have friends of erhu around.

Can you tell me about the lesson you've been taking? I wish I knew there was an instructor offering one-on-one instructions.

Jack, I sent you his contact information. He was a classmate of Ma Xiaohui and earlier this year hosted a concert of her's in Montgomery community college.

This is the youtube account of a student of his showing him with some of the beginner pieces:

Wow, if you are on part with the student in the video, this class is probably too easy for you. The instructor said that he will not teach anything beyond xaima.

Is it the teacher or is it the student playing in the videos?

Seems to me the standard of the playing is at a pro level.
