I have been puzzled for a long time about how to tell whether sheet music in Western notation is in a major key or in its relative minor, since they have exactly the same key signature. If the sheet music is in jianpu, is there a way to tell whether it's major or minor? For example, the relative minor of D Major is B Minor. So if a tune is in D Major, it will say 1=D, and if it is in the relative minor of D, it will say 1=B, right? But then how do I know it's not in B Major? Any help on telling the difference in either Western or jianpu or both would be greatly appreciated. Dennis

The scale in jianpu is always the diatonic major scale. If you wanted to play a minor scale, you would play: 6 lower octave, 7 lower octave, 1,2,3,4,5. This would give you the right sequence of tones and semitones of a minor scale Eg: D major is 1=D in jianpu, open strings 1 and 5 D minor is 1=F major in jianpu, open strings are 6 dot under, and 3. In effect it's 6=D in jianpu. Last edited on Sun Sep 14th, 2008 05:53 am by huqiner |

Hello Dennis, The flip answer would be to simply play the tune. That should certainly tell you if the key is major or minor. The difference is in the choice of notes in the scale. If 1=F and the action centers around 1 3 5 (F A C), then the tune is probably in F major. On the other hand if the tonal center is 6. 1 3 (D F A), then you have D minor. Usually the cadences at the ends of phrases, indicate the actual key. The final cadence of the tune also ends on the key of the tune. I would hesitate to claim these are rules for every tune, but they usually work for me. Best wishes, David

Thanks for the input. I'll work on those ideas. Dennis
