I jsut read the post here: http://tansungwah.blogspot.com/2008/08/first-and-only-online-erhu-classes-in.html They will start teaching Erhu online classes. I bought some products from his online store and everything was great. My Erhu sounds way much better.

Yes they have been working on this for some time now and for all those around the world that do not have access to an instructor or teacher this will be a big tool for all. By the way he jsut sent an e-maiol on the topic I asked here alst time. He is extremely kind and helpful and his products are great. I sent him some pictures of my Erhu and he noticed right the way that I don't have a felt dumper at the base of my Erhu. I don't have anything felt here with so I put a piece of soft sissue just for testing and it worked right the way. Thank you, Sung (SW).

Yes very true SW has always been a big supporter of beginners as well as advanced musicians and always there for anyone who needs help no matter how busy he is. On a personal note I am proud to know this man and I am looking forward to traveling to meet and get to know him in person as well. Welcome to the forum, dj. There are a lot of erhu-related posts on this forum that you may find useful. For other on-line resources, you might check with sung Wah (Song) at the Eason website regarding the lessons described in this thread. There are also some videos in the Resources section of the Eason website that are about as good as you are going to find in English. You might also check into the videos that George Gao sells from his website. The videos and other information you find on the web will not really teach you how to play the erhu, but you can use them as a resource for teaching yourself. I highly recommend finding a teacher or class where you can get some up-close and personal help. Even one lesson will make a big difference. Good luck! Best wishes, David

Hi Dj, We have discontinued the online lessons due to some technical issues. But we took many positives from it and are currently working on something else that is going to be much better and more affordable. I expect that to be ready in another 4-5 month's time. Meanwhile, feel free to look at the free videos that I have posted here: http://www.youtube.com/user/tansungwah Thanks! SW

Sung Wah, Do you think that Abing silver erquan strings would give me some erquan erhu sound on my HEH23? Also, if I put a set of erhu strings on my traditional gaohu, will it sound like an erhu? Thanks. Will

Hi Will, It is worth a try, but maybe not with abing silver erquan strings. I have some dunhuang erquan strings which should go better with your erhu. I don't think putting erhu strings on gaohu will work though. It should sound very harsh and feel unresponsive. SW

These are some instructional videos on Youtube, but only in Chinese. I don't think you can learn to play the erhu from them, they're more like demonstrations. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=%E5%88%98%E9%95%BF%E7%A6%8F&aq=f If the link doesn't work, searching with 刘长福 should bring up the videos. The erhu player is Liu Changfu , from the Central Conservatory in Beijing. Last edited on Thu Jun 18th, 2009 07:33 pm by huqiner |

Tune the inside/fat string to D, and the outside/skinny string to A. The D is the same pitch as the first D above middle C on a piano. Best wishes, David

you could use a keyboard to sound the notes and use the peg of the erhu to bring it up to the same sound while listening........ I have a small electronic gadget that sounds out the D and the A continually , each press of the button toggles the note sounding from one to the other. the 2 notes needed to tune the erhu. with the tuning thing notes , sounding continuously and bowing the erhu slightly you can hear when the notes are alike.

http://www.aptuner.com/ (Windows only)![]() tune to D4 and A4. Audio editor and recorder, but can also generate a tone in any pitch, which you can record and play back: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Both are free.
