I use a "short" mic stand.
The kind used to mic guitar amps or a kick drum.
It doesn't look awkward to me.

During the olympic closing ceremony, they had erhu players.  I saw this on TV and this detail doesn't show up on any online videos.   I thought I saw the word Roland written on this thin platform

Here are some pictures of our poor man's mic stand for erhu.
All you really need is that $5 mic clip assessory to clip the mic clip onto any stand and it works very well. We like to use the collapsable music stand; fold it up and it's ready for the next erhu gig ;-) And when you need it as a music stand again, just put the top back on. A compact camera tripod, etc. may also work. Minor adjustments to height/position of mic easily done with one hand while still sitting down with your erhu.

Mike, thanks for your effort! here's what I normally use. It's a mini Mic stand for Cello and Erhu. The mic clip is the standard size for almost all popular Dynamic Mics...eg Sm58, Sennheiser e835, Akg etc.

I always use Sennheiser mics for all my shows.

This mic looks very tempting indeed esp. simple to clip to the erhu neck, as suggested.
Easily adjustable, and easily switched to another erhu.
From the manual: "Linear sound condenser capsule suitable for high sound pressure levels".
Looks reasonably priced (for proaudio stuff) and comes with it's own preamp to boot, and XLR option...nice i like it..

The clamp attaches to the neck, and I bend the pickup itself to the backside of the erhu. It has taken a bit of getting used to, but I like the results.

Best wishes,

David

Depending on how handy you are, You could make up a piezo pick up and attach it to the bridge, not the skin head. I use these all the time for all kinds of things. here is an article on how to make one:

http://home.earthlink.net/~erinys/contactmic.html

what the article doesn't say is that you can cut down the piezo element to a more usable size (quite small in the case of the erhu bridge) by holding it firmly with a pair of pliers and cutting with a set of heavy duty scissors. Just be careful not to break the solder points on the element itself.

From there, simply adhear it to the bridge with a bit of double sided tape and see what it sounds like through a high fidelity amplifier (ie: a pa system and not a guitar amplifier). You may find that it is too "upper mid range squawky" which can be remedied with an external preamp (Fishman makes several good ones). Once you find the location which gives the best response, glue the pick up in place with some krazy glue. Obviously there is no turning back from this point so if you are at all hesitant for any reason, don't do it. However, used the right way, you will have an excelent set up with very basically no distortion, feedback or other problems. I swear by these things for all kinds of applications.

Sworch, ggod point. I did thought of putting a piezo on the bridge, but the bridge is so small. Yes,if you super glue it, it may work...and you can still remove the entire bridge easily.

Sworch, I made the piezo pickup from http://home.earthlink.net/~erinys/contactmic.html...and it sounded pretty good on my humble erhu!

i put it on the snake skin and the tone was full and nice. Now...how do I stick it on the snake skin without damaging the skin? Any idea?

I wouldn't want to advise you on adhering something to the snakeskin top. I would be very cautious of damaging it. All I can say about that is that sticking it to the interior of the head may be an option too. Just do some research on how to do it safely, you really wouldn't want to screw that head up. Also, while the tone is nicer, piezoing the head rather than the bridge will give you more feedback issues at higher volumes.

Sorry, I'm using banjo terminology. By "head" I mean the snakeskin drumhead. What I'm getting at is you may be able to stick the piezo to the inside of the head (in the body of the  instrument, accessed from the back assuming it's open) rather than on it's face. Again, be real careful with how you secide to attach it so as not to damage the head itself.

Sworch, ah... I see.I did thought of cutting the back off to insert the pickup to the back of the skin.
