Zhen take your bow out of the Erhu and take a soft rag then snug your string to it is not loose nor is it to tight. take your rosin block and a knife cut the rosin block or save it till you have a powder on the soft cloth then run the bow hair from one end to the other back and forth evenly and firmly. Being that the bow is new you will have to do this several times. Now David has been nice enough to provide you with a name and address for a teacher there he will fill you out on the rest of things to set up with your new instrument Anything else just post it some one will try to answer you as soon as they can. God Bless

Maybe it depends on the rosin, but I prefer not to score the rosin with a knife. The rosin particles need to be very small to do their job properly, and I have better results just using more strokes of the rosin on the bow. I think that this results in a more even sound throughout the length of the bow. Some good erhu players appear to do fine using the knife, so take your pick. I find that particularly when a bow is new without any rosin, that it takes quite a few strokes to get enough on. On a new bow, I might do 50-60 up-and-back strokes on each side of the hair. Sometimes more, if the sound is not even yet. Be sure to clean up any rosin dust that settles on the erhu. Apply more rosin again in a day or so, maybe ten strokes. If you see a cloud of rosin dust form when you play the erhu, that is too much rosin <g>. Once you get the feeling for the feel and sound of enough rosin, you will know when to apply more. My teacher adds a few strokes every few days. Once the rosin is binding well to the bow, the sound will be better and more even. The rosin that comes with a new erhu is typically not very good. Several of the ones I have purchased have even come with cello rosin. This is not suitable at all. The best rosin to use is a high-quality European violin rosin, such as Pirastro Obbligato. You can get this at music stores that sell violins, or via the web. I am actually using a Chinese rosin "Song" that I got from Eason. I like it a lot, but my teacher still favors the Pirastro. If you can study with Warren Chang, he will explain all of this to you and make sure your erhu is properly set up. It is hard enough to play the erhu without equipment problems. <g> Best wishes, David

Clyde, I live in Mililani. I just bought an erhu from Eason Enterprise. I want to learn from a good teacher. Can you recommend anyone in Hawaii? Thanks!
