Hi, I am taking erhu lessons and at times, I come across a western piece that I would like to practice on my erhu. Three questions:
1) what are the rules or guidelines for grouping notes into the same bow movement?
2) are there any PC software to help translate western notation into jianpu  -- if not full translation than at least help create a legible jianpu (and the variety of symbols).
3) I find that I need to transpose the western piece into the key of D, or G (and less into F, C, Bflat) to fit the range of the erhu. Is this proper?

thanks

I'm pretty new to erhu myself, but I have played violin for quite a while and there sems to be some carry over so I will try answering some of your questions. If anyone out there has more to add I'd be happy to learn more.

1)      Grouping notes into the same bow movement: The most common sign that notes should be linked together is a slur. If a slur is present, all of the notes beneath will be in the same bow movement. (if you are looking at western notation, the slur may appear under the notes at times, the same rule still applies.) If you are looking at erhu music or violin music you may also see symbols for up-bow/push bow which looks like a V or down-bow/pull bow which looks like an upside down boxy U. There are some good examples of these on Sung Wah’s erhu symbols and ornaments video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFeS_4TUu3g

At other times you will let the music dictate how notes should be linked. Your bowing patterns are part of how you interpret the music and there are very few hard and fast rules for interpretation. If you are not sure about how notes should be grouped, try a few different ways and see which you like best. Your teacher can also likely guide you on good bowing patterns for individual pieces.

2)       Creating Jianpu: I don’t know about programs where you can put the western score in and get jianpu out but if you would like to type out your own jianpu you may want to look at the topic Sharing editable Erhu Jianpu scores in MS Word found at http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/forum50/5175.html on this site.

 3)       Transposing to fit the erhu range: I don’t know about being “proper” but western is transposed all the time to fit different instruments. I see no reason erhu should not be included.  Most of the music I have been playing on erhu was found in library books and transposed into erhu appropriate keys and it seems to be working quite well.

I hope that helps a little. If anything doesn’t make sense let me know.

Marquette1,

I have tried to transpose "Unchained Melody" without success.  I did try to use Dsouthwood's charts and I got nowhere.   Do you have any suggestions?

Will

Hello Will,

Please clarify what you are trying to do and what your problem is. Specific questions will be easier to answer.

Best wishes,

David

Hi Will,

In case you need the numeric notation of unchained melody, here it is : http://zhaogepu.com/jianpu/11879.html

It can be played in the key of Bb or C.
