Hello everyone,

I'm new here, but I have been looking at this instrument for quite some time. I feel that there are few others that have the kind of expressive nature that the erhu is capable of, and initially I had planned to purchase one and begin learning how to play. However my interest has taken on new and serious dimensions. I have been reading many of your postings, about design (especially the post about bridge design- thank you for all of your efforts btw). My reasons for deciding on this undertaking are numerous. For one, I am a metal and glass sculpter, but I am also a woodworker. Second, I work in a place that gives me access to over one-hundred species of hardwood from throughout the world. Also, One of my associates has gone to school to build acoustic and electric guitars professionally, and as you may imagine, he is a wealth of information and is quite interested as well. Finally I can machine parts if necessary to "enhance" certain features, and coupled with my initial interest, hopefully turn out a fairly refined result. I can imagine the great satisfaction of producing an instrument that is of good quality, that I may play myself as I begin to learn this wonderful instrument. Hopefully I can also share with you any knowledge I might gain through my resources and efforts so that you can benefit as well. I have already learned a few things about what may help improve sound quality and why. If there is anyone here who would be willing to share any information, such as dimensions and construction, it would be greatly appreaciated. It will take some time though, but good quality requires patience as you all know, and coupled with the various other projects I have under my belt, and well as finally getting out of some very difficult times that have been thrust upon me, I want to make clear that this may take up to a year. However in that time, I hope to gain real insight that can be shared with anyone else who may be interested and create plans that may be reproduced. I know that right now, I probably know very little compared to most of you who have played for many years, but my hope is to have a greater understanding, and help others in whatever way I can.

Thank you Clyde!

This certainly helps me to get a starting point on creating plans to work from. I will probably buy an inexpensive one to "dissect" after awhile, but for now any dimensions you can give me are greatly appreciated.

Btw, the information about the python skin and bridge design was very fascinating. I was wondering though, has anyone tried creating a bridge with a concave "foot", Basically creating a small resonating cavity with smaller contact surface against the skin? Perhaps another experiment when the time comes.

hi inquisitive  and welcome.

I will probably be contacting you in a few days , after our vacation,   about getting some wood from you.  I checked at a nearly local store yesterday for some wood but did not find what tempted me to try.    I had made a very basic un-sculpted one out of freewood a while ago.   I gave it to my Grandson recently as a welcome home present after his extremely successful brain tumor surgery and he is fascinated with it. he is only 7 years old.

I am soon ready to spend lots of hours making another, this time trying for appearance as well.  I need to find some quality wood though.

btw, it is a most satisfying experiment,  making your own !

Hi Den,

Glad to hear of the successful surgery. I hope all is well and that you enjoy your time-off. I look forward to hearing from you and will be happy to help you with wood for your new instrument, however it can get very costly depending on which woods you intend to use. I'm still talking with my associate to determine which woods I will want to use to construct the various parts of the finished work. Initially I will build at least one practice piece out of cheaper material, to familiariaze myself with the process. Always a good idea to minimize costs when you're ironing out the kinks.

Till I hear from you then,

Hi Jothid, are you the same person as Inquisitive1?

If so, you had a good idea, same as what Den seemed to do to make his own erhu; maybe best to buy an erhu then try to replicate/improve on it. Hopefully you have some snakes around where you live as well ;-)

I came across a video on basic erhu construction earlier; I am going to post it on Youtube as soon as I can (as I can't find the original link anymore). I have also sent out a few requests for input to a few erhu makers that I know, and so far I've not received any concrete response; will post any results as soon as I have them.

In the meantime, does anyone have any basic blueprint that we can start off?

Inquisitive1: How do you plan on obtaining python skin? Do you have any experience in working with this material?

No I'm not the same person. I stay in South Africa, I'm sure I'll be able to find a snake or 2.

reber ,   here is a site showing how to stretch a skin on a shamisen.  I aint up to it personally ,  but it is neat to watch anyway.   I have now idea whatsoever if this is related to the method they use to stretch a skin on an erhu.   so, for the uniqueness of it you may find it ...  interesting.
