Update on my previous post about putting Vaseline on the skin:
http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/view_post.php?post_id=44890

I've put some more on a couple of times after the first application. After each time, there's a noticeable difference in the sound. It's less harsh and less brittle. It's become smoother.

However when playing in a large room, I notice the sound did'n't seem to carry as well as before, it seems to get lost. It might have become too dull. This is all with using an almost black coloured bridge, the type with a solid circular bottom. I was using this type because I found it tended to produce a smoother and less harsh sound compared with lighter coloured bridges.

So I changed to a bridge made from a lighter coloured wood and it seems to produce a more balanced sound.

The one thing I heard from my erhu teacher was that while applying some oil could improve the sound of a poor-quality erhu (she was speaking about one specific erhu that had a terrible sound), it would also shorten its lifespan because the skin would wear out sooner.

I heard some implications of this in the thread, but I have to wonder then - what is this lifespan reduced to? Without knowing how long a typical erhu lasts (and is it like running shoes, where it's dependent on mileage more than actual age?), I wonder what the cost is of conditioning the skin?

I don't know what effect oiling has on the skin in the long term, but I would choose a better sound instead of a longer lifespan.

This is what the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra says:

A huqin does not have a long working life, which is normally about 10 years. When a new instrument comes into use it takes three to four years of 'breaking-in' for its timbre to be developed, but then in six to seven years the tone colours begin to turn dry because the membrane, having gone through successive expansion and contraction under hot and cold conditions, has aged and gradually loses its suppleness.

from http://www.hkco.org/eng/learning_inst_2_1_eng.asp

I don't know if this is just one person's opinion or if it's the general view held by erhu makers and players.

huqiner, I completely agree with better sound than longer lifespan, especially Sung Wah offers reskining services if the worst happens! LoL
