Our weather is not extreme like Russia, Eastern Europe and Africa. Can I assume that my erhu will be fine without adding any oil since I'm in a country where the climate is pretty consistent in temperature and humidity?

I would leave it as it is if i were you.  Unless were you are happen to be in a very dry place and you see the snakeskin became very dry.

So I finally had a chance to communicate with the Japanese vendor in Okinawa, Japan for the Habu oil I was talkin' about, and he agreed to send me a bottle of the stuff. Once it comes, I'll try it out on my Dunhuang and we'll see the results~!

And if I screw up, Sung Wah, got any good recommendations for a new starter to intermediate level Erhu? :P

Okay, I'm sold. My erhu does sound a lot more mellow after applying the oil~~~

Not to mention, it brought back that new Erhu shine & flexibility in the skin~ :D

you did receive the oil and applied it?   that was quick.  and you noticed a difference immediately?   now that is worth noting.    flexibility of the skin?   I never prodded mine ,  just touched it very lightly one time,  and thought it to be quite rigid.  do you suppose I could benefit from an oil massage,    I mean the snake skin......

so,  how much did you use and what did you use to rub it in with,   ,and how long an application did you work on it?

at first I wasnt too much interested about doing that to mine,  but,   that might change after you tell us a little more.

thanks for the report so far,  sounds promising.

Yeah Den, apparently I was thinking they shipped it when Rakuten (the Japanese Ebay like platform) sent me the e-mail notifying me about shipment. But apparently the store itself sent it a few days ago. Got it first thing this morning and since I was working from home today, spend some time trying it out.

Just did what the site told me, 2-3 drops, rub it alittle (2-4 minutes or less), wait for it to dry. Waited around 5-6 hours before trying it out.  Like a few of the other's experience, the first thing I noticed is when I tapping on the skin, the sound was less dry..... I can't really explain it, but its a thing we Shamisen player do to test the sound before play, since we use animal skins that "breathe" too.

I would say when you tap on the skin, it sounds less hollow to me. As for the flexibility, also detected from the tap, gives you more a kick back vibration.

Well, I since I have done something similar with the Japanese Snakeskin Sanxian (with two big pieces of thinner snakeskins at both sides) with good results, so I wasn't afraid to try it on my Erhu..... (that and my Erhu is cheap starter one anyway)

I use natural Japanese snake oil. Its greatly used in dry Okinawa to protect their snakeskin instruments, so I'm sure they're using it for a good reason there. The only beef I have against it is that it smells alittle like reptiles when you apply it.

You can always try Sung Wah's (Olive Oil) or Clyde's (Fish Oil) method since they are experience with this. Anyway, the Japanese oil is kind of expensive compared to Olive Oil or Fish Oil.

Hello AllenZ,

Thanks very much for telling us about the Habu oil. I bought some and it came in a tiny little bottle, about 1.25" high. Yup...pretty expensive alright, but worth it. Anyway, I tried it, and I love it. The skin looks beautiful and it sounds different...in a good way. The oil does have a slight smell...almost fishy like, but not bad. That must be the reptile smell you described. Thanks for sharing this info! I would've never known about Habu oil otherwise.

You're welcome May, the Japanese has been using Habu Oil for their Snakeskin Sanxians for a long time, I guess they know from experience.

Don't remind me of my Habu Oil, I brought a small glass bottle of it and it was around 40+ USD & shipping from Okinawa. The worst is that I spilled some and loss a quarter at least (its like at least $15+ USD down into my carpet) from it. Now that part of my carpet smells like reptiles or fish, but at least the smell isn't strong.

It's a good thing you only need like 2 drops every 2-3 months at most. What's left in my bottle will last me for at least 4-5 years and beyond~

Would the best skincare be a massage as these fellows seem to think?

I think that baby can make me enough Snakeskin to last me for centuries.

Well, that's if I figure out how to change my own Erhu skin. Of course that includes adjusting the skin for tone and all that....

May,
I was playing around with the tone of my new Erhu's snakeskin after the Habu oil and found that the tone was too mellow for my liking. So I did a variation of Clyde's method of heating it, I let the skin to dry a little under the afternoon sun (not the scorching noon one) for under 10 minutes and the tone got a little bit drier.

I guess that's a way against oversaturation of the Habu oil.  That or maybe a space heater or sun lamp would work the same. If you're worried about over-drying apply a light layer of the oil before the tanning. That's what I did to get back a level of sweetness to the tone of it.

Hi AllenZ,

Thanks so much for sharing your results with using the Habu oil! :)

How many times did you apply the oil before you found the sound to be too mellow? I've only applied once, on one of my erhu. I used very little. I haven't reached the "overly mellow" point yet, but thanks so much for your feedback and tip.  That's really good to know in case of over-saturation. I will keep it in mind.

Overall, I love this oil...thanks to you, or I'll never know about such an oil. It just intrigued me that it came from a snake itself. Snake oil for snake skin. Makes sense to me.

Actually I recently brought a sweet new Erhu from Sung Wah. Great sound and the tone is on the sweet side. Since I loved it so much, after a few days of practicing rigorous, wanted to protect the skin from my dry, dry room so I applied a layer of Habu Oil.

The problem was that a day after the application I found the sound to be alittle overly mellow and so of the sweetness drown out. So that's why I was experimenting in getting back that sweetness. At first I think I dried it too much, so the tone became more nasal. Then I tried again by reapplying a thin layer and giving it less time in the sun. Now it's close to the original tone, but my Erhu's snakeskin scale looks great~

But if I do get a really quality toned Erhu, I don't think I would apply the Habu Oil as early as this time.

I wonder what those expert Erhu makers do to adjust the tones produce by their Erhu Skins? There should be some kind of method that they use to make their signature Erhu sound so special....

Hi AllenZ,

Yes, I would go real easy on the Habu oil too. Good thing you got the sweet tone back on your new erhu!

After applying the oil, I leave the bridge off for 24 hours before putting it back on. I'm afraid the skin will sag with the pressure from the bridge after the oil application.  Yes, the skin definitely looks better afterwards!

Since it's so very dry here in LA, for light maintenance, instead of oil, I also use my Reptile conditioner.  That's the one used for snake skin boots or bags. It's non-greasy and it also cleans the skin. By now, I feel very comfortable using it. But only when needed.

May,
Yeah I do that too. I leave the bridge off there at least 24 hrs too. I think those Japanese Sanshin (Sanxian) people do that too.

Sung Wah,
Too bad I don't have a really small container or I'll just ship some to you. I'm willing to share some with you.

Do you have one of those small 1ml perfume sample bottles? If you do, ship one to my house, I'll fill it up and ship it back to you. 1 ml should last you at least 8 light applications for a small Erhu. If you're planning to use it on a Snakeskin Sanxian, maybe 6 applications.

As for getting it, I think May saw it on Ebay before.

I had to talk to store based in Okinawa for my's, he was telling me most Japanese Erhu stores carry it, but charge an arm or leg for a small bottle.

here is the original ebay link where I had found the snakeoil.   this item number is expired but it will still show up ,  it will get you the sellers name from there.  I see at the moment he does not have any listed but emailing the seller should get results.

search by item number....Item number: 220210027673

it was $13 plus $5 shipping.

Thanks for your offer Allen.  I've just sent the habu oil seller in Ebay a message.  We'll see if he has new stocks.

Ok the habu oil seller is out of habu oil.  I might have to take up your offer Allen.

Thanks!
