Woodstock,
When you say it doesn't sound right, my guess is that you are not hitting your notes correctly.  I have a Korg CA-30 (about $15).  It's small enough you can place on the music stand or on you lap and when you play a note, it can tell you if you are too high or too low.

Hi Karl,

Thanks for the suggestion.  Yes, I do have a chromatic tuner.  It does register the correct note.  I guess I am too much of a perfectionist and dwell on one note too much instead of the whole score.  But I have found another video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyKYaO8IiWI&NR=1 and it has a clearer finger movement that I can follow.  I am trying to get ahead of myself a little so when I go for my lessons in June that I don’t have to start from ground zero.

Hi Thunderbird,

I have not given up hope in learning Saima.  Maybe I’ll learn it in the next series of lessons.   Is it you or somebody has an aunt who knows only thee musical scores and she is very good at them.   Well, maybe I will a one trick pony too:D.

I have just received a notice from Paypal.  I have attached it below so you folks can see what it looks like.  It's a fraud.  As you can see at the bottom of the notice, there is a button that you can click to dispute the transaction.  Thank goodness for my security program and I was alerted.  If you received something like this, just delete it or forward it to spool@paypal.com.  But don't click that button.  I did forward it to Paypal.  I am told "...Paypal will never ask for your passward over the phone or in an email and will always address you by your first and last name..."  I hope this will help fome of you folks from getting scam.

I didn't realize the printing on the notice is so small.   The key thing to look for is the"To" field on the email.  It says "Undisclosed recipients" and the "subject" field is "Please solve this problem"  On the legitimate Paypal notice the "To" field should be your name and your email address.  The subject field should have "Receipt for your payment" (that is what I got from Sung Wah)

Thanks Will. You gotta look for cyber frauds like that all the time.

Speaking of interesting..... I bet everyone heard this song before:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxKf8De8rUw

I find the transposed version to be something of its own entirety, but that might because I play the same instrument before the Erhu. (Bias)

But even though some parts are messy, I like the sound of it feels like pipa or GuZheng mix.

I also heard a soprano recorder version of that song, but still thinks its sounds like its Erhu equivalent.....

Hi Allenz,

How are the lessons?  Making much progress?  I just received 3 erhu instructional books from my relative in China.  One elementary, one essential in erhu and last one is an intermediate by .  This is the same author as your instructional DVD.    I won’t have much use for his book because it is beyond me in this lifetime.  Even in the elementary book, the scores included in the book such as liang xiao and saima.  Maybe I can come back in my next life as erhu master;)

Hey Will.
The lessons are kinda slow these days, only up to Lesson 20 in the textbook these days. My 趙寒陽 thing is actually a book. I never brought his DVDs before, actually I don't own any Erhu DVDs..... its hard enough to learn from books already.

But from my collection of Japanese & Chinese Erhu books, I gotta say 趙寒陽's is the best since it covers everything.

Hi Allenz,

Too bad that you are not moving any faster in your lessons, you ought to break down and take the series of private lessons.  At least you can dictate your own speed.  I have gleaned enough information off this forum that I am able to practice most of the exercises in the workbook.  In fact I should be able to finish all the exercises before I go up to NYC in June.  Because they want students to sign up for 12 private lessons at a time, I might have look elsewhere for one or two private lessons on a needed basis. They used to have musical association in NYC Chinatown but I am not sure they still have them.  That would be a good source of talent.  Then again, they might be all gaohu players.  The older players are most likely play Cantonese opera music.

Hey Will,
I have around 7-8 Group Lessons left (Well, not really a group, just me and this other guy) left I think. Since I just invested in a better Erhu from Sung Wah, I think I'll continue..... Are you gonna take weekly lessons at WoSing too? I think I'll probably run into you there without notice sooner or later.

One funny thing about my new Erhu, I can finally blame it for something. I always thought it was me that was not making it really sing, but I just got my new Erhu Sung Wah which proved me wrong.

Regarding the Music Association..... I'm pretty sure my parent's Gaohu guest at my place last month was from that. It's mostly Gaohu masters that learn by themselves and are kinda reluctant to teach. Not because they don't want to share, its that they are humble. They always said they themselves never really learn the Erhu, "the right way" and might be teaching kids the wrong stuff.

Hi Allenz,

I am going be in NYC & NJ area for 3 weeks (normally I only stay for two weeks). It would be enough time for me to do two lessons per week.  WoSing told me that they don’t want me to stretch out the lessons beyond a year.  That is why I have to finish all the lessons.   I will try to persuade them to allow me to sign up for a couple of private lessons at a time since I live so far away.   Meanwhile, when I am in the city, I will try to network with one of the gaohu player in the citizen center.  BTW, my lesson schedule is Wed & Sat.

Ah.... Will, actually I think there's a music school in Flushing.... just take the mini-vans from Chinatown to Flushing ($2), its like less than 30 minutes. You might want to look into that, I don't have website or an address tho'. You can ask the Gaohu people they might know a few place even I don't know.

I know there's a place that sells music supplies too, you might be able to pick up a few books on Erhu. I remember the Gaohu master told me there was store that used to sell music instruments, but since no one knew it where it is. Its just stockpiling its Erhus..... they were so desperate to sell their stuff, they sold the Gaohu master a hand made profession level Suchou Erhu for $100 flat.

I get weekend lessons on Saturday only. I think there's only a beginner class (me and this other guy) and an intermediate class with a girl there on that day.

Im back again after a few weeks gone,  need to play catch-up with all the great posts meanwhile.

I have been toying with a tune,   Greensleeves.(also known as "what child is this")   I found all the notes but cannot really describe them too well as for key or whatever.   I start out the tune on the G note inner string and the second note is maybe named a b flatflat or something,  it is quite close to the qianjin cord   also when it gets time to play the F note it seems also to be a flat   ( I think that is correct)

Would any of you happen to have a printed notation of that tune to share here?

Hi Allenz,

Can you find out more information about these music stores in the east coast and share it with the rest of us?

Thanks

All I know its in Flushing. I'll try to look thru the Chinese Newspapers to see if there's any ads. Otherwise, try taking a stroll at Main Street, you might run into it~! w

Hi Allen,

I am back from NY a few days ago.  I finished my 7 lessons and brain full of information.  All I have to do now is to translate that info onto my fingers.  There is so much to learn and so little time.  I found out that Mr. Zhang is from Tian Jin [size=天津] .   My friend who grew up in Beijing told me that there is such thing as Tian Jin dialect.   No wonder we had a hard time of understanding his mandarin.   I managed to go to Columbus Park and listened to the senior citizen’s ensemble.  As usual, they played the Cantonese opera stuff.  One lady got up and sang Shang Hai Tan.  She was pretty good.   Just as I expected, there was no erhu player in the ensemble, only gaohu players.  So there goes my idea of networking for my future lessons.  Do you have any more info on possible music school in Flushing?

Will

Hey Will,
Sifu Zhang's Mandarin isn't that bad to understand, I heard worst dialects before in college. It just is confusing sometimes when he rolls his tongue in some words I normal know and messes me up.

I always pass by Columbus Park and that essemble of Opera singers are always there but they seem to busy to share anything. However, I did run into a friendly Gaohu player & Sanxian player at the Grand St. Subway Station, they play there on the weekend. They loved sharing what they knew.

As for the Flushing School, unfortunately the Traditional Chinese Music school doesn't have an Erhu teacher at the time. But you can learn Pipa, Guzheng, and other stuff.
