Hi Pandabare,

I too need to make a post as a new participant on the forum. Just came back from 3 wks in China, with an Erhu in tow. I was enticed by a local market vendor that was playing a simple tune...looked easy!! Can now play 'Happy Birthday' with my eyes closed...looking to move upward and onward. Guitar is my first first love, but taking to travelling lately, the guitar is way too bulky, the Erhu just might become one of my permanent travel mates. If I ever get fairly good at it, I will attempt to build one with tuning pegs and something other than snake skin.

I must express my appreciation to everyone on this forum who have contributed, I would have easily hung this instrument on the wall as an ornament if it weren't for all of you.

I'm still reading and learning.

Thank you

welcome aboard to musicman and pandabare .   This is such a good site to study this erhu.  there are a Lot of participants here.    Thanks for the tip of happy birthday,  I have been trying to think of more songs that fit in the 8 note range for beginning.  any more songs that fit???

I like the idea of yours,  building an erhu,  any ideas of what all could be tried besides python skin?

sure,  that one will work,  and I may need that much time to learn to play it acceptably.    the only other couple I can think of at the moment is Sweet Betsy from Pike and Streets of Laredo.

Den

thanks

another that will work is "The theme From The Titanic"

that one seems to fit and is quite a pretty melody,  good for long bowing practise

Hi All,

Thanks for the warm welcome. In response to the 8-note concerto, the tune the local vendor was playing that that hooked me is actually only 5 notes…’When the Saints Go Marching By’

Regarding the snakeskin substitute, I would probably go for some very thin wood…almost a veneer. If it’s too thin, I might reinforce it with a strut or two on the underside. I think I would stay away from the traditional hexagon shape and opt for a round sound box…gets rid of the whole drying-out-of-the-glue-joint problem. I also have a snare drum with a tear in the head, might use the undamaged portion for the sound box. I also want to incorporate some fine-tuning system, maybe based on the violin mechanism…but first I need to find the kid scratching the blackboard every time I pick up the erhu…

You have me wondering too, what would be a good experiment for covering the soundbox,   I would think a lot of things would work, and each have their own sound.  How would you fit the pegs? arent they a tapered hole precisely matched to the tapered peg?

and thanks for another song to the beginner list.......   we could get quite a list of them going here after a short while.  My memory just isnt creative enough to really think of all the old melodies,  and then figureing if they would fit the one octave range.

good for practise though but I really think I should start to search for some authentic chinese melody , after all, it is an erhu.  So far all the chinese melodies I stumble across are so complicated  I get sensory overload.

8 notes tunes:
mary had a little lamb
twinkle twinkle little stars
amazing grace
oh susanna

for the snakeskin replacement, I've seen someone used plastic. Else u can experiment with a piece of animal skin from your local butcher.

The covering of the sound box needs to amplify the sound of the vibrating string. The easier the surface can vibrate with the string, the better the sound…a thick piece of wood would not ‘move’ easily, but a thin piece might. The plastic suggestion is great, I can easily see a discarded yogurt or margarine container giving nice volume… using a thin piece of metal…maybe a discarded tin can, would probably produce a bright sound. Either way, put a pole through it, and a thin bridge, and you could have the start of a low cost, functional erhu.

Den, you are correct that the tapered tuning pegs are trouble. On my erhu the strings are difficult to tune and the pegs tend to slip… If I were to build one, I think I’d rather use a couple of geared (guitar) tuning pegs on there to get the note right. Alternatively (because the wooden tuning pegs ‘define’ the erhu look) I might use a non-tapered wooden peg that is locked in place with a screw on the opposite end. That way I could get it to near tune, lock it, and then use a violin single-string adjuster to get it spot on.

There are post here that recommend aplying a film of chalk to the peg and hole, to lock it in place.   I  would certainly try that out.

thanks sung wah for the addtional tunes and tips of coverings.

do you think we could or should create a new topic, for posting a list of songs,  and/or links of them,  for various abilities?   We could have them all in one spot then instead of scattered throughout a wide variety of topics helter skelter.

Sounds like a good idea Den. Why not you create a topic then we'll all chip in?

Actually I came in here to ask:  Where is Bayun????  Haven't seen his postings for quite sometime.  I hope he's alright....
